Two Events This Thursday with the fantastic Trillium String Quartet!
The Trillium String Quartet, including DePauw Music alum Amelia Smerz, will offer two free events at Gobin Church on Thursday March 12: a 4:00-5:00pm interactive presentation on the art of chamber music, and a 7:30pm concert featuring music by Florence Price, Gabriella Smith, and Felix Mendelssohn.

The Trillium Quartet’s local appearances are sponsored by the Greencastle Summer Music Festival as part of its commitment to year-round arts activities, and by Doc and the Dandelion: Your Local Bed & Breakfasts. Comprised of violinists Sommer Altier and Judith Kim, violist Sydney Link and cellist Amelia Smerz, the Trillium String Quartet formed in 2024 out of a love for chamber music, collaboration and connection.

In 2025, the quartet completed a year-long residency as the Graduate String Quartet at Montclair State University. The quartet served as faculty for the inaugural Kinhaven Semester School Program, a holistic educational opportunity for young musicians with a special interest in chamber music. Throughout this residency, Trillium provided intensive coachings and lessons, as well as curating and performing weekly concerts throughout southern Vermont.

Trillium is currently in residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music, teaching and performing at the conservatory and throughout the community. Trillium is passionate about performing music in their communities, valuing education and outreach as a foundation for increasing access to the arts. Throughout the east coast, the quartet organizes masterclasses, free concerts and presentations through its connection with local high schools, private studios and outreach organizations.

Acclaimed multi-genre vocalist, instrumentalist and musical healer JennyRebecca Winans returns to Greencastle for two special events this weekend!
JennyRebecca Winans ( a DePauw music alum) returns to Greencastle from her current home base in Berlin to offer two special events this weekend.

As with all GSMF-sponsored events, there is no admission charge, and donations to support the artist are welcome.

1-3pm Saturday 1/31 at The Doc's Inn (126 E. Washington St.): "The Opposite of Depression is Expression" -- a trauma-informed, body-based workshop that uses breath, voice, songwriting and Compassion Method™ practices to help you shift mood, lower stress, and find small, lasting openings to joy. Current issues have you stressed? Come experience the healing power of creative self-expression.

3:00pm Sunday 2/1 at Gobin Church: a special concert featuring JennyRebecca's original music and innovative arrangements of classics.
American vocal performer, JENNYREBECCA, hails from a small town in Kansas & now lives in Berlin, having moved there from New York City to continue her career as an opera singer. After experiencing a devastating loss, she processed her grief through a daily songwriting diary, and 1,000 songs later, released her first album. This songwriting project not only saved her life, but became her path to healing, pushing her to explore beyond strictly classical music, to experimenting with electronic & pop music, & taking her back to her roots of folk, Americana, country, and soul.

From Eric: JennyRebecca was one of the most creative and engaged students I worked with at DePauw, embracing the the opportunities for creative self expression offered in my improvisation-based courses, as well as developing the skills of a major opera singer. She went on from DePauw to the Manhattan School of Music, and then to a significant professional career in classical music before embracing her own, truly profound, music creativity. I'm thrilled we are hosting her for both Saturday's workshop and Sunday afternoon's concert.

This weekend's events are made possible by the GSMF family of donors, including Doc and the Dandelion: Your Local BnBs. You can support the GSMF's year-round offerings at greencastlemusic.org.donate.

Here's a sample of her artistry:

Song and Lyrics written and performed by JennyRebecca Winans Ronning. Video and film by Jonathan Goudefroy. Music Production by Julian Grafe.

Lie Down and Listen in the Dark

Wednesday, November 12 • 9:00–10:00 p.m. • Gobin Church Sanctuary

The world feels heavy right now. Fires burn, hearts ache, and our minds rarely find stillness. Mental health experts remind us that rest, silence, and a break from our screens are essential for the soul. We invite you to an hour of peace and presence in our beautiful candlelit sanctuary.

Bring a yoga mat, sleeping bag, blanket, or pillow—and settle into a space on the floor, a pew or the prayground—as Eric Edberg (cello), Micah Layne (flute), and Alexander Toro-Quiñones (pipe organ) offer live music designed to quiet the mind and open the heart.

Phones off. Candles lit. Music in the dark.

Leave your smartphone in the basket on your way in—it’ll be waiting for you on your way out.

Come breathe. Come rest. Come listen.

"Lie Down and Listen in the Dark is co-sponsored by Gobin Church and the Greencastle Summer Music Festival."

Friends,

This past Thursday, our music community lost Rick Provine, an innate talent on the drums who shared in our mission of friends making music for friends.

Rick is pictured here in 2019, performing with Eric, Cathie Malach, Chris White, Fiona Clark, Steve Michael, Ben Hogan and Bill Hamm at the GSMF. Many knew him from Jazz at The Duck, and he was also a former dean of libraries at DePauw University. In all he did, from his advocacy to our local music scene, he believed in bringing people together.

We ask that you please lift up our local artists and Rick's family and colleagues during this time.

It's not "Goodbye," old friend. It's "See you later."

What a 21st season for the GSMF! We had amazing artists and musicians who put on spectacular performances every week. It couldn't be possible without you and our community partners.

The festival's *free* programs are gifts through generous donations made by you folks, as well as financial backing from The Doc and the Dandelion and The Inn at DePauw, and through our endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation. Of course, there's always been Gobin Church providing the stage.

This is to say that it takes a community for something special like the GSMF, and we are grateful for each and every one of you for your support and attendance this season. Look forward to 2026!

But not sure if you can get across Washington St. if you live on the north side of town?

You can!

Just take FRANKLIN ST. to LOCUT ST. and you can cross Washington St.

Then it's just a couple of blocks to either the parking lot on the north side of Gobin, street parking on Locust St., or the angled spaces on Simpson St. on the south side of the Gobin building.
