The Greenbelt Pumpkin Festival

The Greenbelt Pumpkin Festival Pumpkins. Woods. Free. Awesome. Help put the community in our community forest with the Greenbelt P The Greenbelt Pumpkin Walk. Yes, we are talking about Goatman.

GREENBELT PUMPKIN WALK-A LITTLE SLICE OF AMERICANA, AND, YES, GOATMAN

Awesome family friendly event in the DC Metro area happening Saturday, October 28th from 5:30-9PM. Seriously the most fun you can have walking through the forest. We are now in our 29th year of setting up hundreds of jack o'lanterns to light a woodland trail. This free event celebrates the community's fight to protect the Great Northern Woods from development. The walk, once used as a rallying call for protection, has evolved into an annual celebration. In 2003, the City of Greenbelt decided to forever protect the natural character of this 200 plus acre woods--now known as the Greenbelt Forest Preserve. Reports suggest that this year we will continue to experience occasional glimpses along the trail of the PG County local legend--part goat, part man; an experiment gone terribly wrong. While he originally escaped from the USDA's Beltsville Agricultural Farm to conduct a kill crazy rampage, he appears to have mellowed in his old age. We think he even might now be vegetarian. Every year, he graces our woods to join the community in celebrating the forest powered by tahini and good vibrations. Enjoy the before party on Friday, October 27th at our free Community Carve-Off to create community-inspired jack o'lanterns that will line the pumpkin walk, while listening to local Greenbelt bands. Join us for the most magical night in Greenbelt, and indeed, perhaps the WORLD.

Three cheers for the Greenbelt Park Rangers who showed up to bolster our very small volunteer group this morning, loading and unloading 175 pumpkins for tonight’s Pumpkin Carving at Trunk or Treat in Greenbelt West!

Both the Parks Department and Public Works provide enormous support for the Pumpkin Festival and we couldn’t do it without their help, but today was really above and beyond our expectations. THANK YOU!!

Our final pumpkin carving is scheduled for this Friday, October 24th, as part of Trunk or Treat behind the Beltway Plaza Mall from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. We still need volunteers to help us load up pumpkins at the Greenbelt Co-Op (10:00 to 10:30 am), unload those same pumpkins at Beltway Plaza (4:00 to 4:30 pm), set up tables and carving tools (4:00 to 5:00 pm), act as Carving Hosts, assisting participants as needed (5:00 to 7:00 pm) and pumpkin clean-up (7:00 to 8:00 pm).

We know that our sign-up genius is very long, but please keep scrolling to the very bottom to find the sign up slots for Beltway Plaza Mall in Greenbelt West! Come be part of the fun!

Lore Rosenthal has shared a recipe from her friend Svetlana which makes use of the leftover pumpkin guts from pumpkin carving. We'll have lots more pumpkin guts this Friday at our next carving, so you can try it and let us know what you think. I'd love to see photos of your soup! (text version of recipe in comments)

We would like to thank Rodney Roberts for his longstanding support of the Pumpkin Walk. In addition to being one of the original founders of the Pumpkin Walk, he personally provides hot chocolate and apple c***r at the end of the path. This is not funded or organized by the Festival, Rodney just quietly makes it happen, year after year, without fanfare or fuss. Just one more thing that makes the Pumpkin Walk amazing!

We had a fantastic pumpkin walk in the North Woods tonight! We counted 1602 visitors, which is probably close to accurate, but may not be exact; at some points it was so crowded that we missed people or may have counted someone twice. We hope it all averages out! Goodnight Greenbelt, thanks for making this such a great place to live! (Photo: a view of pumpkins on the trail just before the lights were extinguished).
