HISTORY OF BRONC DAY-

The first Bronc Day was held July 1,1939 as the '"Official Opening of the Tourist Season" and to honor the Vertical Mile Marathon Racers who were training for the race up Pikes Peak while staying in Green Mountain Fails. a clown, and a parade queen, met the marathon racers in Cascade and escorted them to Green Mountain F

alls for a day of fun including saddle relay races, trick riding, sack races, ceremonial Indian dances, and evening fireworks. Over the years Bronc Day grew with the addition of more Gymkhana riding contests, gun battle shows. a King and Queen contest, barbecues, and jitterbug and square dancing. The parade had many years with over 100 horses (149 in 1948), but later, the 4 lane US 24 Highway construction took over the area that had been used for the riding events. In recent years additions include RC boat races, arts and crafts booths, and more activities for the entire family. The King and Queen have been replaced by a Grand Marshal to honor a prominent citizen(s).

Grand Marshal of the 88th annual Bronc Day parade on July 25!

Steve Murphy - recently retired Fire Chief of the Green Mountain Falls/Chipita Park Fire Department - is a Colorado native, born in Colorado Springs and raised in Manitou Springs. In 1986, he and his wife of 44 years, Francie, made their home in Green Mountain Falls.

Steve’s path into the fire service began in 1997 after he assisted the local fire department during a major April snowstorm. With his father having served as a volunteer firefighter in Manitou Springs, the fire service had long been a meaningful part of his life.

In 2006, Steve was elected Fire Chief by his fellow volunteers, succeeding longtime Chief Rich Bowman. Four years later, in 2010, the district board transitioned the Fire Chief role into a full-time paid position.

Over the past 20 years, Steve has had the privilege of leading an exceptional group of volunteers, guided by the support and mentorship of many in the fire and EMS community. Serving the residents of the Ute Pass area has been both an honor and a deeply rewarding experience, filled with lasting friendships.

Steve and Francie have one son, Emerson, who volunteered with the department before moving to Denver. Steve is also a proud grandfather to two grandsons, Spencer and Arthur, and looks forward to spending more “Papa Chief” time with them.

He extends heartfelt thanks to his wonderful and patient wife, Francie, for her unwavering support and for putting up with nearly three decades of fire department shenanigans.

How cool were the Peregrine Falcon and Wolf puppets in the 4th of July parade? Hats off to Ute Pass Elementary School and Sofia Gabriella Hernandez Crade for an impressive display.

The Southern Ute Veterans Association and Southern Ute Indian Tribe held the place of honor at the 4th of July parade in Green Mountain Falls. The Southern Ute Veterans Association honors all the tribal veterans who served this country and the sacrifices they made for our freedom. We thank them for their service.
