RonKat Spearman shares about one of his favorite HSMF memories—performing in our Family Village. High Sierra is one of the most kid friendly festivals out there, and we take pride in the curated programming we deliver to the families who believe that live music should be experienced at every age.

The Troubadour Sessions have always been something different. No main stage spectacle — just 4 artists, a small crowd, and something that feels uncomfortably close to magic. Over the years, we’ve watched jaws drop, tears fall, and total strangers become lifelong friends and collaborators.

Share your favorite Troubadour memory below! 👇
Which year, which artists, which moment stopped you in your tracks? Tell us — and tag the friend who was there with you.

There’s a moment around midnight when the big stages go quiet and the real magic begins.

The Troubadour Sessions don’t announce themselves with production crews or lighting rigs. You find them by following the sound — a single voice cutting through the quiet, a guitar tuned just slightly loose from the road.

This is what the festival circuit used to be before it became an industry. A songwriter with nothing but a song and enough nerve to play it for strangers who might actually listen.

We have watched two artists who’d never met trade verses for an hour like they’d been writing together for years. Witnessed a crowd of a hundred people go completely silent in the dark — not out of politeness, but out of that rare thing: being genuinely moved.

Bring your curiosity and patience. Leave your phone in your pocket for at least one song (or the whole time).

High Sierra gives you a lot of reasons to stay up late. The Troubadour Sessions are one of the best.

If you’ve been to HSMF, you know the festival is famous for its high-energy late-night shows, dynamic activities, and round-the-clock vibes. But the Troubadour Sessions offer a completely different kind of magic. They strip back the massive stage setups for a stripped-down, storyteller-style format. What makes these sessions so special:

The Format: Four singer-songwriters sit in a circle on stage, sharing their craft in the round.

The Interaction: Artists swap songs, tell the personal stories behind their lyrics, and organically jam together.

The Vibe: It’s an intimate, cozy, and coffee-shop-like atmosphere that provides a beautiful, reflective contrast to the rowdier late-night dancing.

Check out our lineup for 2026, and make sure to add these one-of-a-kind moments to your schedule plan.

Big thanks to Jennifer Nobles and The Union for this great feature and interview with producer Dave Margulies about High Sierra’s exciting move to the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley for its 34th year. “High” time for a change indeed. We can’t wait to bring four days of incredible music, community, late nights, family fun, and High Sierra magic to Nevada County this July 2 to 5.

It’s quite a year for High Sierra Music Festival.

The Regional and Online band contests have officially wrapped up, and we’re excited to announce that we now have our finalists! The talent this year has been incredible, and we’re thrilled to invite all finalists to join us at High Sierra Music Festival to perform on the Community Stage during the festival weekend. The finalists are:

Nevada City: Blu Egyptian
Marin: Huney Knuckles
SF: Andre Cruz & The Black Diamond Rhythm Band
East Bay: Temple Monarch
Tahoe: Bahena
Southern Oregon:The Hasbens
Santa Cruz: Space Heater
Online: Kevin Daniel
Online: Slow Coast

But that’s not all…The finalists with the most votes will earn spots on some of the festival’s stages — including the grand prize winner, who will have the honor of opening the Vaudeville Stage on Friday, and three runners-up will get a slot opening the Tall Pines Stage on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Fan voting begins next week, and this year voting will be exclusive to festival ticket holders.

So if you’ve been on the fence — or just haven’t pulled the trigger yet — now’s the time to grab your tickets and help decide which amazing emerging artists make their official High Sierra debut. Ticket holders will receive an email with a google form that will be matched to their ticket email Monday of next week. Make sure to keep an eye out for this and get your vote in promptly.
