Mowing some grass with ye olde put-put tractor!😁

Got the old John Deere A out and set it up with a old brush mower I got from Karl and Lisa Wittstruck.

Had some fun with it for the day but the old muffler blew out about 10 minutes in so i had to wear ear plugs the whole time.

What makes someone love their job?
For me, its the odd behind-the-scenes things great and small that I get to see, talk about and find thanks to my wonderful customer base of farmers, small an larger businesses that generate tons of scrap items!

One of the highlights of my job is my ever growing customer base that lets me dumpster dive their scrap bins and salvage odd things that they see no value in anymore due to being broken or just old and no longer of value to them.

Thank you to everyone who I has let me have their old junk to fix up and repurpose and put to good use or regift to others who needed whatever it was more than I do! Much of that old junk you let me have has now gone on to live a second life doing things well beyond what you ever used it for! πŸ₯°

Follow up on the old John Deere A. with everything is back together and running good and a short video on a cold start after sitting for a few days.

I also redid the old fuel bowl to have the shutoff valve point out instead of in so that it's easier to get to now. Not that I need to shut the fuel off anymore being the carburetor rebuild fixed the flooding and general leaking issues.

The picture of the radiator cap and right side panel are where it had a big dent in it. Its not a perfect fix but it at least its not caved in 3 inches deep anymore. All that's left is to make a new seat for it and get the lighting systems to work and it will be a fully functional tractor again.

If you are curious as to what getting it back up and ruing cost me. it was around $750 - $800 in parts and about 20 hours of time.

Another side project completed. Got my old John Deere A fixed up and running again. (1952 model) I bought this off a friends Grandparents years ago and didn't do much with it due to how many issues it had. It worked but not well.

Originally it had one of those large clunky farm hand loader systems on it which made it pretty useless. I stripped that of it back around 2016 and never did much more due to the radiator being too rotten to ever keep coolant in it, the carburetor never worked properly and so many other small things being in bad shape.

Back in June I finally found a aftermarket radiator recore kit that was a direct fit (supposedly) for this year of model A tractors. (Not exact fit but was able to make it work.) The problem I ran into was that there were several revisions by JD over its production run and I had the odd one out that was never in stock.

What started as a weekend or two side project redo turned into about a two month long run of multiple part orders and a lot of hours of removing almost every bolt in it the hard way, being most of them were so rusted in they twisted off when I took it apart. I had about 12 - 15 hours just into the clean up and bolt removal work.

Beyond that the carburetor needed rebuilding and heat riser tube and radiator cap neck was rotten too and mice had filled the whole cooling system including the engine block with mouse nests and seeds which took a lot of disassembly and power washing to flush it all out. (pile of seeds under it on the one picture)

While I was into it I did a full fluids change out so the engine oil and filter plus transmission and hydraulic system are all clean and full of new oils again. I flushed everything with old jet fuel and what came out was awful. I'm guessing that nothing had been changed on it in decades before I ever got it.

Last weeks near 4 inches of rain gave me some much needed garage time so I got the latest trailer project up to being road worthy. It still needs a folding ramp for the back and a front panel but its useable!

Another little project was taking an old heavy plate I had and turning it into an anvil table of sorts. I've already used it a bunch. Its great for flattening out bent stuff.

Just some random stuff.

Went to the spring equipment auction and got lots of goodies this year.

Got a Miller Trailblazer 250G welder generator. It didn't run, but it was an easy fix. The battery and fuel lines were junk, and the carburetor was full of crud but that is all that was wrong with it. Took about an hour to fix it and it runs nice now!

Also got a pile of lawn and garden tools. The Masterforce 80v cordless chainsaw is almost brand new and works great!
Same with the Chamberlain air compressor/worklight combo thing. (Still had the idiot tags on them.)

The old skidsteeer was the deal of the day. ($375) It's an old Massey Ferguson 711. It needs some TLC but it does run. I'll do more write-ups on it as I get into it.

Beyond that stuff, I got a bunch of hand tools and other smaller things for cheap including a pallet of old air compressors and a big tool box/fuel tank combo with a pile of power washer hoses with it.
The gas drive portable air compressor was what I was bidding on. The other two plus the toolbox and hose, got thrown in with it.
I got the two electric air compressors working but the gas drive unit compressor is locked up. (I have parts to fix it.)

All around, it was a good haul this year! πŸ₯³

More trailer build updates from this week.
The main frame assy is done and it's back right side up and on its wheels again.

I had to replace the old axle U-bolts because the threads were too rusty to reuse and flipped the spring brackets over and moved them out further to match the wider frame.
The jack also needed to be taken off and redone due to it having been welded crooked and needed a good cleaning to get it to move properly.

I'm hoping to get enough free time this week to get the fenders and side rails on it so that I can clean it up and paint it.

Got some more done with the new trailer build yesterday. πŸ₯³

Today was mostly just cleaning up and triming everything to fit and then squaring things up and tack-welding them into place.

In pictures, it doesn't look like a big change but in real time this was ~ 5 - 6 hours worth of work, not including sitting there staring at it pondering on how I wanted to put things together so that it has a neat and clean look to it when it's done.

The modifications to the original frame layout to put the floor supports and the tongue beams under the main trailer body frame are what took so long.

Every piece is something that was cut out of some other part of the old frame so nothing has an even or square dimension to it. Due to that, every piece has to be matched up side to side and then trimmed to match and then trimmed to fit with what it attaches to.
Also, I widened the frame from an odd ~ 55" width to a 60" inch width meant every cross support needed to be lengthened.

Plus, almost every reused piece had something welded to it somewhere so each old weld point needed to be ground down and blended back in to not show itself.

To get to where I am now is about 10 hours of work time and I am expecting this to be about a 40 - 45 hour project when I am done with it.

Starting another small trailer project.
This one is similar to the last one in the sense of turning another old camper frame into a small flatbed utility trailer.
I may have to form a new company called "The Used Trailer Guy" if I keep this trend up. 🀑

Last summer I bought the frame from an old 14-foot single-axle camper at an auction for something like $50. The plan on this one is to compact it down to a 5' x 10' single axle utility but with a heavier-than-normal axle for this size of the trailer.

All the newer ones I have seen in this size top out at around 3000 - 3500 pounds (typically 3 - 4 leaves per side) on the axle but this old one being originally for a larger camper is good to at least 4500. (6 leaves per side).

Today's work was chopping it up and roughing in the pieces to their new configuration.

Fun little side project for some friends.

A few weeks ago some friend's mailbox gave up on life so I offered to do a reuild to help out. Normally a mailbox rebuild would not be a big deal to report on but check out the gear they had on the bottom! 😎

As for the old box and stand it was just old. The wood was rotten, the metal was pretty well rusted out and it was too short by today's postal requirements.

Not really any pictures to share here but I put new fuel injectors in the oil truck last week. Went from the stock ones to aftermarket performance brand units and gained around 50 to 60% on fuel mileage and loads of power for it.

Absolutely unreal how much this helped the old truck! The stock ones were the old style single hole 24 lb/hr style Ford used in everything from the late 1980's to at least the late 2000's/mid 20-teens. I switched them out with Trick Flow brand (Made in USA 10-year warranty!) multi-hole spary pattern 24 Lb/hr units.

Well worth the ~$580 investment! Went from 5 - 6 MPG and pathetically underpowered to 8 - 9 MPG and loads of power.
Now I am planning to remove all the emissions system BS and see if I cant get another MPG or two more out of it. (Well known to make big improvements on these mid-90s vehicles.)

Next up will be the service truck to see what updating it does since it uses the same stock injector design as the oil truck. 😁πŸ₯³
