The two black bear attacks on people over the recent weekend has brought Colorado bear problems to the news. These attacks bring the total to 10 for this year. Colorado is possibly the worst state when it come to managing wildlife through the ballot box rather than scientific biology. Most people know about their recent wolf debacle, but did you know that before the wolves, black bear management was significantly harmed by a vote that removed both hounds and baiting from the tools needed to manage bear populations? Since then, the state has had to drop the price of nonresident bear tags to encourage more out of state hunters. They also raised the bag limit from one to two per year. Still the bear population is out of control, and black bear attacks are on the rise. States should use science not opinion to manage wildlife.
