Taylor Honors Seven Seniors During 1-1 Draw Against Bethel

UPLAND, Ind. – A Senior Night match ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday night against Bethel (6-4-6, 0-3-5 CL) after a first-half goal from Eliza Luttrell was matched with a goal from the Pilots in the second half.

Taylor honored a remarkable seven seniors on the pitch at halftime: Lauren Collins, Sarah Mullins, Emma Carrell, Audrey Grimm, Rachel Landis, Moriah Dunham, and Sydney Thompson, all of which started at least one match this season.

The Trojans started the game with five seniors on the pitch and were on the front foot, placing the ball in the back of the net early, only for the refs to call it back for the ball being out of play earlier in the buildup.

Taylor did not waste time scoring, as Kiana Siefert made a run along the wing and came into the box before finding Luttrell, who turned it home for the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.

After halftime, Bethel began to gain some momentum and work the ball into attacking positions, but the TU defense and Brianna Rawlings kept them ahead until a long looping pass from the wing fell and bounced to the feet of a Pilot attacker who fired it into the back of the net for the equalizer.

Each team looked for the game-winner, with the Trojans having more chances and firing 18 shots, twice as many as the visitors.

Siefert fired the final shot just high as time expired shortly after, with the squads sharing the points.

Taylor (7-5-3, 4-3-1 CL) completes its regular season schedule on Wednesday, October 30th, against Goshen (1-10-5, 0-5-3 CL) on the road, with kick-off set for 7:00 pm.

Efficient Team Effort Leads to Blowout Victory in Arizona

GLENDALE, Ariz. – An all-around efficient team effort saw Taylor (2-0) run away with an 89-58 win over Justice College (0-3) as 12 players scored a bucket for the Trojans on Saturday night.

A quick 10-2 lead continued to grow throughout as the Trojan offense exploded for 51 points in the first half, led by ten from Anton Webb.

The team made seven triples from five players in the opening stanza, along with eight from inside the arc and 12 of 13 from the charity stripe in an efficient offensive display. Six players scored six or more in the first half, and the team shot 50 percent from the field.

Pete Combs was efficient off the bench, scoring six points on a pair of shots and a pair of attempts from the free-throw line in less than two minutes near the end of the half.

Combs continued his efficient performance throughout the entire contest, going a perfect 5-5 from the field and a solid 3-4 on free throws. The sophomore big man ended the night with 13 points.

The Trojans extended their lead throughout the second half and peaked at 34 when TU led 81-47 with five minutes to play. The Trojans reached 80 with eight minutes remaining before taking the foot off the gas.

Webb finished the contest with a team-leading 14 points and six rebounds, along with two assists, one steal, and two blocks in a stat-sheet-stuffing display. Kaden Fuhrmann added 11 points and six rebounds, with Jackson Ullom and Kobe Funderburk joining them in double digits at ten apiece.

Trojans Ride Fast Start, Strong Finish to Home Win

UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor scored the first 21 points and the final 13 of Saturday’s home clash with Lawrence Tech, getting back into the win column with a 48-30 victory over the Blue Devils inside Turner Stadium.

The Trojans rode the legs of Dakohta Sonnichsen throughout and the senior delivered with big play after big play, ending the day with two touchdowns, a two-point conversion and 194 all-purpose yards on just six touches. Sonnichsen posted a game-high 121 rushing yards and two scores on four carries, averaging 30.3 yards per run, while catching one ball for 46 yards and returning one kickoff for 27 yards.

With Sonnichsen providing the chunk plays, Taylor leaned on Jameson Chesser, Kyle Turanchick and Damon Hockett for a combined 161 rushing yards on 39 carries. Turanchick powered in for two touchdowns, with Hockett scoring once and Chesser tying the TU single-season record with his 15th rushing touchdown of the year.

For the game, Taylor rushed for 319 yards on 6.4 yards a pop and ended with seven rushing touchdowns. The seven scores boosted TU’s single-season program-record to 38 and pushed the Trojans into the NAIA lead in that category, while the 300-yard game marked the sixth of the year for the NAIA’s second-best rushing attack.

Aven Jones led the defense with 11 tackles, eclipsing the century mark on the year with his seventh performance of double-digit sticks. Mixed into the 11 stops were seven solo tackles and one sack.

Other defensive standouts included Jacob Hockett with seven tackles, Parker Whitby with 1.5 sacks, David Worlds with a trio of pass breakups and Thad Thoman with five quarterback pressures. In all, Taylor posted four sacks, seven tackles for lost yardage, seven pass breakups and 11 quarterback pressures.

That defensive effort helped Taylor take control early, as the Trojans limited LTU (1-6, 0-2 MSFA) to 112 total yards of offense in the first half. The Blue Devils completed just four-of-17 passes and managed just four rushing yards outside of quarterback carries in the opening 30 minutes.

Taylor rode that strong defensive play to a 28-7 lead at the break, before Lawrence Tech finally came alive in the third with a pair of touchdowns and a converted on-side kick that set up a field goal early in the fourth.

The LTU spurt continued through the early minutes of the fourth, as a Taylor fumble gave the ball back to the suddenly hot Devils and another touchdown from the guests narrowed the Trojan cushion to 35-30 with 10:42 to play.

As it did all afternoon, Taylor turned to Sonnichsen for a big moment and was rewarded on a 47-yard run on third-and-nine that moved the ball to the LTU 12-yard line. Chesser handled it twice from there, pushing the lead up to 42-30 on runs of three and nine yards.

A quick defensive stop handed the ball back to the Trojans and a 21-yard scamper to the end zone by Hockett put the game away at 48-30 with just-under two minutes remaining.

Taylor (6-2, 2-1 MSFA) will play at home once again on Saturday, November 2 with a 1:00 pm start against Defiance (3-5).

No. 15 Women’s Soccer Drops Regular Season Finale at No. 21 Ohio State

Penn State awaits the start of the 2024 B1G Tournament Thursday in Minneapolis

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 15 Penn State women’s soccer dropped its 2024 regular season finale on Sunday afternoon, falling by a 4-1 margin to the No. 21 Ohio State Buckeyes in its third consecutive nationally ranked road matchup from Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

In defeat, Penn State drops to 11-5-3 overall through its 19th and final match of the 2024 campaign, dropping to 5-4-2 against Big Ten Conference competitors following the 11-match league calendar. The loss guaranteed that PSU would open its 2024 postseason in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament later this week from Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota seeded between No. 7 and No. 10 in the league tournament. With the win in hand, Ohio State climbs to 11-4-3 overall and 6-3-2 against conference foes, awaiting the remainder of the decision Sunday matches to go final before determining their seeding.

On the final box score, Ohio State picked up a 21-17 differential in total shot attempts, becoming the eighth opponent this season to out-shoot Penn State overall. The Nittany Lions and Buckeyes played to a 7-7 draw in terms of on-target shot attempts, with the sides also recording a narrow battle in the corner kick competition. OSU out-cornered Penn State by a slim 4-3 margin overall on the afternoon. The Buckeyes were more overtly physical on the day, booking 13 fouls against seven whistles for the Blue & White, also notching the only two yellow cards on the day from the officiating crew.

Individually, redshirt senior forward Kaitlyn MacBean recorded her 14th goal of the 2024 campaign for PSU with a second-half tally that cut the Buckeye lead back to two scores. MacBean, a native of Excelsior, Minnesota, heads back to her home state for the Big Ten Tournament later this week boasting the third-highest scoring tally in the B1G behind Minnesota’s Khyah Harper and OSU’s Kailyn Dudukovich. Senior midfielder Jordan Fusco collected her ninth assist on the year, with her eighth helper of a MacBean goal in the process, while freshman forward Aubrey Kulpa dished out her third collegiate assist on the lone PSU goal to improve to 11 points on her rookie campaign.

In goal, Nittany Lion keeper and redshirt sophomore Mackenzie Gress turned back a trio of Buckeye shots on goal while allowing a quartet of scores en route to her second loss of the year. Gress was forced to defend against the most shots she has faced in her collegiate career to date, with the 21 Buckeye tries outpacing 20 shot attempts, her previous career high, against the UCLA Bruins on the road last Thursday. For Ohio State, Molly Pritchard faced off against 17 Nittany Lion shots, booking six saves against one goal allowed in the winning decision.

The first 15 minutes of action passed largely without incident, as neither squad was able to muster any significant chances despite Penn State dominating the possession through the early going. In the 18th, the Buckeyes worked the ball down the right wing, and a high-arching service into the box from the far-right side of the field sailed centrally toward Gress. PSU’s keeper managed to bat the ball away from the goal, but a long rebound sailed out to Jacinda Bonham, who buried the ball into the lower left corner with a right-footed effort. Neither team managed another goal in the latter portion of the period, with Ohio State taking a 1-0 lead into the break.

Out of the intermission, both teams played similarly to the first 15 minutes of the match earlier in the afternoon, with Penn State looking solid in possession despite being largely unable to convert that possession into a volatile scoring threat. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes were able to double their lead with another rebound-sparked goal in the 61st minute, tacking on another goal in the 74th to make it a three-score differential. Off the kickoff a mere seconds following the Buckeye goal, Penn State aggressively challenged up the pitch and found Fusco centrally around 25 yards outside of the Ohio State goal. She fed the ball forward to Kulpa at the edge of the 18, who flicked the ball on to MacBean on the left side of the pitch around 15 yards out. MacBean took a dribble and buried her 14th goal of the year into the back right corner of the Buckeye goal. OSU tallied once again in the 85th to finalize the 4-1 score.
