THE LAST BOYSCOUT — THREE YEARS RUNNING.

One runner went out alone for Yard 16.

And 47 minutes and 38 seconds later, Ryan Kaytor came back.

After a full day of heat, humidity, hills, and trip after trip up Boy Scout Trail, Ryan answered every bell and finished every yard.

16 yards.
66 + miles.
One runner left standing.

For the third year in a row, Ryan Kaytor is The Last Boyscout.

The field threw everything it had at him today. Morgan and Matthew pushed through 100K. Five runners made it farther into this race together than we’ve ever seen before.

But eventually, as it always does in the backyard, the field came down to one.

Ryan looked strong all day. He looked strong into the night. And when everyone else had accomplished what they came for, he still had one more yard to finish.

He did it in 47:38.

🏆 2026 Last Boyscout — Ryan Kaytor

Three straight years. Three straight wins.

ONE RUNNER LEFT.

Yard 15 was the 100K yard, and Morgan and Matthew got exactly what they came for.

100K at The Last Boyscout.

Morgan finishes an incredible day as our Final Female, and Matthew didn’t just set a new distance PR today—he doubled his previous best.

Both decided 100K was enough.

Which means, for the third year in a row, there is one runner left standing.

Ryan Kaytor is out on the final yard. Alone.

The field started with 42 runners. The heat took some. The hills took more. Boy Scout Trail kept collecting them as the day went on. Five made it into the night. Three made it to 100K.

And now there is one.

Ryan has answered every bell.

One more yard to make it official.

For the third year in a row, Ryan Kaytor is trying to become The Last Boyscout.

THINGS CHANGE FAST IN THE BACKYARD.

Four runners completed Yard 14. Four runners answered the bell for the next one.

And then there were three.

Ethan headed out with the group, but quickly turned around and called it a night. He said he’d been hearing some grumblings from the others about how much they were suffering and was hoping maybe he could psych somebody out.

Nobody took the bait. 😂

They all headed back out, so Ethan decided his day was done. 58.3 miles, more than doubling his distance PR of a marathon.

That leaves:

Ryan Kaytor
Matthew Phipps
Morgan Davis

And Morgan has been asking a question the last couple yards:

“Which one is the 100K yard?”

Well, Morgan…this is it.

Yard 15. 100K. Three runners still going.

They’ve all looked strong. But as Ethan just demonstrated, looking strong when the bell rings doesn’t guarantee you’ll still be here an hour later.

Things change fast in the backyard.

AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR.

The first night yard is in the books.

All five made it back from Yard 13, but Landon’s day is done. After battling through the heat, the hills, and more than 50 miles at The Last Boyscout, he decided there wouldn’t be another one.

A strong day and a great effort from Landon.

That leaves four runners out on Yard 14:

Ryan. Matthew. Morgan. Ethan.

The cooler temperatures are here. The headlamps are on. And the race has officially moved into the night.

Four runners still answering the bell.

Boy Scout Trail will see them again shortly.

FIVE RUNNERS. 50 MILES. INTO THE NIGHT.

For the first time in Last Boyscout history, five runners have made it through 50 miles and onto the night course.

Ryan. Matthew. Morgan. Landon. Ethan.

They survived the heat, the humidity and 12 yards of a course that has been taking runners apart all day.

And somehow, all five still look good.

Now they get their reward: the “easier” night course.

Of course, easier is a relative term at The Last Boyscout.

They still have to climb Boy Scout Trail. And because apparently climbing it isn’t enough, they get to turn around and come right back down it.

But the cooler temperatures and faster night course should give them a few extra minutes to recover between yards.

At 50 miles in, though, anything can happen.

Five runners are heading into the darkness.

Let’s see how many are still answering the bell when the sun comes back up.

FIVE IN. FIVE OUT.

All five runners completed Yard 11, and all five answered the bell again.

Ryan led them back into camp in 51:09, a couple minutes quicker than we’ve been seeing. Landon brought the group home in 54:55.

And once again, nobody blinked.

They’re out on their final yard of the day course now. If all five make it back, darkness brings a little relief—the night course typically runs about five minutes faster. They’ve earned every bit of that five minutes.

Ryan. Matthew. Morgan. Landon. Ethan.
Five runners remain. Five sets of big goals.

One more trip around the day course.

Then we find out who came prepared for the night.

FIVE REMAIN — AND THEY’RE STARTING TO SEPARATE

All five runners completed Yard 10 and answered the bell for Yard 11.

Ryan and Ethan came in a couple minutes quicker than they had on previous yards. All five left together, but this time they came back into camp on their own.

Maybe they’re just settling into their own pace. Maybe it isn’t even a conscious decision.

But there’s a message in it anyway:

We’re competitors now.

Ryan. Matthew. Morgan. Landon. Ethan.

All five are feeling the course, but all five still look strong. And at this point, nobody left out there is just trying to make it another lap. They’ve all got lofty goals.

Earlier today, Boy Scout Trail was deciding who stayed in the race.

Now these five might be getting ready to decide that for themselves.

Five headed out on Yard 11.

AND THEN THERE WERE FIVE.

All six runners completed Yard 9.

Travis was bringing up the rear, but he got it done. As the others lined back up to face the course again, he decided nine trips around The Last Boyscout were enough and called it a day.

That leaves our Final Five:

Ryan Kaytor — Herrin
Matthew Phipps — Harrisburg
Morgan Davis — Herrin
Landon Tate — Texico
Ethan Pullum — Carterville

And with the field down to five, Morgan Davis has earned Final Female!

Morgan has battled the heat, humidity and Boy Scout Trail right alongside the rest of this dwindling field and is still out there answering the bell. A strong day on a course that has already sent a lot of runners back to camp.

These five are feeling the miles, the heat and the hills—but they’re still looking strong.

The milestones are behind us now. From here, every yard is simply about answering the bell one more time.

The field has been whittled from 42 starters to five.

Five runners are still willing to answer the bell.
Five runners are still willing to climb Boy Scout.

But there can only be one Last Boyscout.

THE GOALS ARE CHANGING

10 runners completed Yard 7, and 9 headed back out for Yard 8. Two runners had decided seven trips up Boy Scout Trail were enough and chose the walk of shame.

For those still moving, Yard 8 brought a different kind of mental battle.

50K.

That’s a damn good day’s work on this course. For some, getting that patch was the goal. But “just one more yard” is a dangerous mentality when the ultimate goal is being The Last Boyscout.

Seven runners were still chasing that 50K milestone, and all seven got it done.

Then something interesting happened.

All seven lined up for Yard 9.

Christine bowed out as the bell rang, and Ethan had to be ushered out of the corral to heads toward the Boyscout trail.

Six runners are now out on Yard 9.

And as the field thins, the hopefuls are getting easier to spot.

Two-time defending champion Ryan is still looking fresh. Morgan has looked strong. Landon has been 15 yards deep on this course before and knows what’s coming.

The 50K patches have been earned. That goal is behind them.

Now some of these runners are starting to look less at the mileage…

and more at each other.

Six runners remain.
