Good start getting the display up. It take extension ladder, ladder Jack and walking plank to get a platform to put up the snowflake on the tallest peak of the roof. All the snowflakes are on the roof and other props are out and tested.

Three months before it’s time to start setting up this year Christmas display.

I started this prop last year and just go around to finish. These are Big Bulbs and they came with a single white light and I wanted color. I’ve used RGB ribbon and really like the lighting effects in the past in other props like my large lanterns and candles. So I decided to use the same concept for these. I 3D printed a center post and bracket to hold the DC to DC buck converter. The Bulb holds 40 RGB lights and can be controlled individually 10 on each side. The DC to DC buck converter reduces the voltage to 5 volts. I like using the buck converters because you can calculate voltage drop on the wire when you span longer distances. You can use a 12 or 24 volt power supply and when you reach the end of the line you still have plenty of voltage to run the lights and they are as bright and colorful as the first one.

Here are some pictures of the process. These will be used outside and water is always an issue with electronics. I used three different sizes of heat shrink tubing for each one to make them water resistan. Fist size covers the RGB ribbon and post. One size goes around the white base and touts any water out around the base. The last size is used around the clear tubing of the base and wires. These will be hanging and water runs down hill. I looped the wire down and zip tied around itself to hold it in place. Then placed the green top on and then the hanger. With the bulb attached on the inside of the white base. The water will run down past the outside the bulb keeping the inside dry. At least I hope so.

Thank you to everyone that came tonight to see the lights. It was nice seeing family and friends tonight. The amount of cars and visitors was overwhelming. 3 1/2 hours of bumper to bumper traffic. Everyone was very respectful with the neighbors allowing them to enter and exit their homes and being patience waiting in line. We handed out about 2 cases of candy canes. The most I’ve handed out for a single night in all my years doing the display.
