The original ending of The Shining continued after Jack froze in the hedge maze. Wendy and Danny appear alive in a hospital, where Overlook manager Stuart Ullman visits them after the ordeal.

Ullman told Wendy that a police search had uncovered no evidence of anything supernatural at the hotel and no sign of Jack's body. He suggested that stress had caused her to imagine what happened, then invited her and Danny to recover at his home in Los Angeles.

Before leaving, Ullman approached Danny, who was with a nurse, and tossed him the yellow tennis ball from The Overlook. The scene suggested that the events of The Shining were real and Ullman, doing the work of the Overlook, was covering it up.

Kubrick removed the roughly 2-minute epilogue within days of the film's 1980 theatrical release and had the prints destroyed. Co-writer Diane Johnson later said Kubrick had initially believed audiences needed confirmation that Wendy and Danny were safe, but test screenings showed that the hospital sequence weakened the mystery.

The film now ends with the 1921 photograph inside the Overlook. The deleted footage is considered lost, with only its shooting script, several continuity Polaroids, and accounts of the scene remaining.

Sad news for the costume world today~~ RIP
