The Land & Buildings Behind the Coppola Legacy

Long before the current office stood at 34 Vley Road, the Coppola legacy began with something much simpler—a commitment to serve the community.

1950 — Humble Beginnings
Dr. Samuel J. Coppola first opened his dental practice above a small storefront on Mohawk Avenue in Scotia. It wasn’t about the building—it was about building trust. Patients came because of his care, his integrity, and the relationships he formed.

1972 — A Permanent Home
As the practice grew, so did the need for a space that reflected that growth.
The current building on Vley Road was constructed in 1972—a dedicated home for generations of families to receive care.

1986 — A Family Legacy Continues
Dr. David Coppola joined his father in the practice, working side by side for over a decade.

2014 — Expanding for the Next Generation
As patient families grew into second and third generations, the office expanded.
The 2014 addition allowed the practice to bring in modern technology and more advanced care, while still keeping that small, personal feel.
2024 — Most recently, another expansion in 2024.

This practice isn’t standing still—it’s growing with the community it has served for over 75 years. Cheers to the Coppola Family! We appreciate your support for the Scotia-Glenville America 250 Fireworks Celebration

The American Dream, One Cup at a Time

The American Dream doesn’t always start with a plan… sometimes it starts with an opportunity. 🇺🇸

In 1986, Carlos Teixeira arrived in the United States from São Miguel in the Azores to pursue a degree in Marine Biology.

Then something unexpected happened…A colleague introduced him to a Dunkin’ opportunity.

Carlos and his wife Marta took a leap of faith—moving to Upstate New York with their two young kids (Natasha and Miguel) and pregnant with their third (Nicole), building a business from the ground up.

Those early years?
Long days. Little sleep. Endless determination.

Carlos opened, closed, baked, and ran the shop himself—pouring everything he had into a dream that would grow into something much bigger than coffee.

Today, nearly 40 years later, the Teixeira family has built more than a business. They’ve built a community tradition.
☕ Generations of loyal customers
☕ Lifelong friendships formed over coffee
☕ A place where mornings—and memories—begin.

This is what America is all about.

Hard work. Family. Opportunity.

As we celebrate America’s 250th, we’re proud to spotlight local family businesses like the Teixeiras—who remind us that the American Dream is alive and well, right here in our community.
🇺🇸 Thank you for being part of what makes Scotia-Glenville so special and for sponsoring Scotia-Glenville America 250 Fireworks Celebration

If you are under the age of 25, you more likely never heard of Ponderosa, let alone eaten at one. Well, Giddy Up 🤠

It wasn’t fancy.
It wasn’t trendy.
But, somehow this chain restaurant made an impression on our community because everyone says they miss it!

Imagine walking back into time where modern day Sunmark Bank on Route 50 sits today.

You walk in and immediately are hit with the smell of steak on the grill. You grab your tray and head straight for the buffet — piling on salad, rolls, mashed potatoes, and going back at least two more times. It was affordable & a national treasure in the 70s & 80s

Now that is a real ad promoting 99 cent ribeyes! With that being said…..was the food good? What made Ponderosa so special?

Also‼️Curious question: In a post-covid world, should restaurants bring back salad bars?

WE WANT YOU 🇺🇸
This isn’t just another event—this is a once-in-a-generation celebration of America’s 250th Independence Day right here in our community.

And we need our businesses to step up. Just like Uncle Sam called on Americans to be part of something bigger, we’re calling on the local businesses who make this community what it is to stand with us.
📍 June 26, 2026
📍 Mohawk River | Scotia-Glenville

Before garden centers became big and commercial… Glenville grew from places like Van Curler Greenhouses and Pedrick's Greenhouses.

These weren’t just places to buy flowers…they were part of the rhythm of the seasons.

Spring didn’t officially start until you walked through those greenhouse doors — the smell of fresh soil, rows of vibrant annuals, hanging baskets overflowing, and someone there who knew exactly what you needed (and probably your family, too).

Places like Pedrick's Greenhouses are proudly family-owned. And Van Curler Greenhouses carried that same hometown spirit — where gardening wasn’t just a hobby, it was something passed down, season after season.

You didn’t just “shop”…
you chatted.
You learned.
You came back every year.

The flowers in our yards, the tomatoes in backyard gardens, the pride in a well-kept home… it all started there.

Glenville was built on people who grew things… and people who cared enough to share them.

🌸 Did your family go to Van Curler, or do you still purchase your annuals at Pedrick’s?

Kmart wasn’t just a store — it was part of growing up.

It was Blue Light Specials that made you stop in your tracks. It was grabbing a snack at the little café, Little Caesars was also there once upon a time! It was back-to-school shopping with carts full of notebooks, sneakers, and excitement for a new year.

Fast forward to today, our Glenville Target truly does have everything — and then some. Clean, modern, and yes… arguably the Capital Region’s best. It’s where we run in for one thing and leave with ten (no judgment).

But here’s the thing…Before big-box convenience took over, Glenville and Scotia were built on the heart of mom-and-pop shops — the small businesses that knew your name, sponsored your teams, and showed up for the community in ways that went far beyond a transaction.

Kmart was a bridge between those eras . So while we love our Target runs today…
There’s something special about remembering what came before.

Did you grow up going to Kmart in Glenville? What’s one thing you’ll never forget about it? 🛒 I know this 90s kid grew up on K-Mart!

Before Neon Sushi lit up Glenville, it was Friendly’s — and for so many families, it was more than a restaurant.

It was where kids begged for ice cream, where grandparents treated everyone to ice cream, where teams celebrated wins, and where birthday sundaes felt like the biggest deal in the world.

It was the place for grilled cheese, chicken fingers, clam strips, an ice cream counter to choose the perfect scoop, and my personal favorite...waffle fries!

Before DoorDash, Instacart, and before everything moved so fast, Friendly’s was a simple American tradition. A place where you sat down, slowed down, and always saved room for ice cream.

Today, the building has a new life as Neon Sushi, but for many of us, we can still picture the Friendly’s sign, the smell of fries, the sound of spoons hitting sundae glasses, and the memories made around those tables.

What was your Friendly’s order? 🍦
