Photographer Lori Pond was given an Associates Award in Brand 54 for her haunting image, “Utah Winterscape.”

Pond believes, as many scientists do, “that not only are trees sentient beings, but they also communicate with each other via their root systems. They will divert resources to sick trees! I feel when I’m around them that I can communicate with them, too.”

She adds, “When I learned the art of hand-applying gold leaf to an image, I decided to honor the trees that I have been present with by celebrating their winter forms with gold leaf applied to the backs of my translucent vellum images.”

We hope you can see this image in person; it will be on view at Brand until August 28. Also, our handsome print catalog is available for purchase, as are most of the pieces of art in the show.

This week, the second during which you can visit Brand and take in our Works on Paper show, we tip our hat to Polly Chu, who was given an Associates Award at the opening event. She impressed us with her 25 x 38 in. “line drawing.”

Even more so than with many works of art, no representation we can share with you here can convey its essence, specifically its precise detail. You must see it in person!

Chu wrote, “My work with paper is oriented around various threads: stitching into paper, continuous line drawings that create a woven texture ... I am drawn to the versatility and vulnerability of paper; sewing tissue paper has a distinctly different feel than tracing paper or rice paper despite their shared fragility and translucence.

We hope you can see this work, and the other 98 in the exhibit. It will be on view until August 28. Also, our handsome print catalog is available for purchase, as are most of the pieces of art in the show.

This year’s annual exhibition features 100 artworks from around the country. Juror Tracy Bartley, whose years of experience in contemporary fine art can be seen in her exciting choices, offers us an opportunity to explore the versatility of the paper medium.

The Glendale Historical Society has partnered with the Alex Film Society once again for their 2026 Classic Film series on the Doctors House lawn in Brand Park. Brand Library & Art Center was home on Saturday night to a reception celebrating the opening of Brand 54: The 54th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper. It was a gorgeous evening; perhaps you were there!

Today, we’re sharing with you one of the works juror Tracy Bartley selected, Amanda Spinosa’s 44 x 30 in. Risograph monoprint, “Spring Showers” The piece garnered an Associates Award.

Spinosa wrote, “Although the work starts from a personal place of experience or thought, I want my viewer to be able to connect or insert themselves into the work.”
