This premier event tests marksmanship, teamwork, & equipment mastery, embodying Land's legacy of fundamental skill & continuous improvement in long-range shooting The Major Land Sniper Cup (MLSC) stands as a testament to the extraordinary legacy of its namesake and honorary match director, Major Jim Land, USMC (Ret.). This premier long-range shooting competition brings together elite marksmen from
military, law enforcement, and civilian sectors, embodying Major Land's lifelong commitment to excellence in marksmanship and sniper craft. Major Land's illustrious career began when he joined the Marine Corps at 17 in 1953. Rising quickly through the ranks, he achieved E-6 before being selected for Officer Candidate School in 1959. His exceptional shooting skills led to his selection for the Marine Corps Rifle Team, setting the stage for his future contributions to the field of precision marksmanship. In 1961, Major Land made history by founding the first modern Marine sniper course, revolutionizing the approach to precision shooting in military operations. His expertise was put to the test in Vietnam, where he served as the officer in charge of the 1st Marine Division Sniper Teams. It was during this time that he trained and commanded the legendary sniper Carlos Hathcock, further cementing his status as a pivotal figure in sniper lore. Upon returning from Vietnam, Major Land's influence expanded as he took on the role of Marksmanship Coordinator for the entire Marine Corps. In this position, he shaped the marksmanship training standards across the service, ensuring that every Marine was equipped with superior shooting skills. When the Marine Corps Sniper program faced cancellation in 1972, Major Land's dedication to the craft shone through. Working tirelessly with fellow Marines, he successfully reestablished the MOS for Marine Snipers, leading to the creation of the Marine Scout Sniper School at Quantico. This achievement ensured the continuation of elite sniper training for generations of Marines to come. Beyond his military service, Major Land's impact on the shooting community extended to his 21-year tenure as Secretary of the National Rifle Association (NRA), where he continued to advocate for marksmanship excellence and responsible firearm use. The Major Land Sniper Cup is designed to honor this remarkable legacy. Unlike typical sniper matches, the MLSC focuses intensely on fundamental marksmanship skills while also challenging shooters' ability to communicate effectively as a team and master their equipment. This approach reflects Major Land's emphasis on solid fundamentals and comprehensive training. The event features:
A challenging multi-stage course of fire that tests various aspects of long-range shooting
Scenarios that require effective team communication and rapid equipment deployment
A blend of traditional and modern shooting challenges
Opportunities for continuous learning through expert-led clinics and shared experiences
As we continue to honor Major Land's immense contributions to the field of precision shooting, the MLSC remains committed to advancing marksmanship skills, fostering camaraderie among shooters, and upholding the highest standards of professionalism. We invite marksmen of all backgrounds to join us in this celebration of skill, dedication, and the enduring pursuit of excellence in the spirit of Major Jim Land's lasting legacy.
