Stephen P. Folkemer has arranged some familiar hymns magnificently, and has composed illuminating settings of Scripture texts. This Sunday, April 19, we'll get to hear and sing many of them, at 4 PM in the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary. For 40 years he has led the early music choir he formed, Schola Cantorum of Gettysburg, and now he's retiring as its director. In celebration of his gifts, the SCG has put together a program for choir, organ, brass and strings, plus a good deal of assembly singing. Along with psalms and other Scripture texts, many of the hymn texts were written by the great preacher and hymn-writer Herman G. Stuempfle, Jr. It is free and open to all -- a great chance to revel in Stephen's gifts!

On Sunday, April 12 at 4 PM, Music, Gettysburg! will welcome 2 world-famous musicians to the chapel of ULS. The NY Times praised cellist Amit Peled's "glowing tone" and the Strad called him fiery and intelligent. And the Strad described pianist Martin Labazevitch "exuberant, multi-faceted, ...gripping from first note to the last." They will perform works by Beethoven and Chopin, as well as "Bestemming," a gripping, moving meditation on the Holocaust. Like all Music, Gettysburg! concerts, this will be free and open to all.

“Kill the wabbit!!!” Remember that great cartoon? Chances are it, or one like it, was your introduction to classical music and to opera in particular. Relive those glory days, and introduce them to your kids or grandchildren on Saturday morning, March 28 at 10 AM at the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary, 147 Seminary Ridge.

Your guide will be Mark Tiarks, recently retired from the Santa Fe Opera, having earlier been involved in administration of the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Chicago’s Court Theater, and the Chicago Opera Theater. Mark is an entertaining speaker, and will be showing clips from magnificent animation from Warner Bros., Disney, and MGM. It’s a great chance to hear wonderful music, enjoy great cartoons, and learn something about the history of making animated movies.

Like all Music, Gettysburg! events this performance is free of charge and open to all. Unlike most such events, participants are welcome to come in their pajamas, and will receive free cereal snacks to enjoy.
