Happy Earth Day! 🌎
Today we’re also celebrating 28 years of Discover Life in America and the Smokies’ All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory. Since April 22, 1998, we’ve partnered with Great Smoky Mountains National Park to document every species we can find—and we’re just getting started.
In that time, we’ve more than doubled the number of species known in the park and documented 1,111 species new to science—organisms never before recorded anywhere on Earth.
Why does that matter? Because biodiversity isn’t just beautiful—it’s essential. It’s the foundation of clean water, resilient ecosystems, and a stable climate.
We wouldn’t have been able to keep the discoveries going over the last 28 years without the support of our wonderful park partners, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Smokies Life and Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont!
This earth day, we hope you’ll help protect Great Smoky Mountains National Park by supporting the park and its partners!
