⛪ The building is gone.
The congregation never left.

Before Highland High School existed, Black children in Gastonia were being taught inside Leeper’s Chapel — founded in 1887 by Dr. G.S. Leeper and his wife, Josephine.

The church later became Third Street Presbyterian Church… even though the street was never actually named Third Street at all.

A small mistake.
A powerful legacy.

They survived slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the fight for Black education — and 137 years later, they are still standing. Still worshipping. Still serving the Highland community.

That is more than church history.

That is resurrection.

We honor this legacy during the 8th Annual Gastonia EbonyFest Juneteenth Festival . ✊🏾
