Fun Fact: Some nativity scenes include not only Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus—but also entire villages, musicians, and market vendors! In Naples, Italy, presepi nativities can fill whole rooms with hundreds of detailed figurines, capturing daily life alongside the holy family. In the Czech Republic, betlémy are beloved Christmas displays crafted from wood, paper, or even gingerbread—often passed down through generations and featured in community exhibits and homes throughout Advent.
No matter how simple or elaborate, each one tells the story of love made visible.

Why is the baby Jesus sometimes shown lying on straw, in gold, or even on leaves?
Artists have used different materials across cultures to symbolize the sacredness of Christ’s birth. The humble manger reminds us that holiness can be found in the simplest places.
Come experience that message anew at our Festival of Nativities, Dec. 5–6.
