Desperado - Eagles Tribute / Little Queen - Music Inspired By Heart

CLASSIC ROCK ROCKS FRISCO TEXAS!

It was a fantastic evening at The Revel Patio Grill in Frisco, TX, as two of DFW’s tribute acts took center stage. Veterans Desperado, an Eagles tribute band, and new comers Little Queen, a Heart tribute band.

Opening the show to a packed house, Little Queen commanded the stage with an undeniable force. Fronted by Grace Figueroa with her statuesque style and powerful voice, she alone led the band song by song. By her side, younger sister Emilia Figueroa played lead guitar like a seasoned musician, both expressing a visual image of the classic rock duo they pay tribute to, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart.

The eye candy the sisters portray is icing on the cake as the entire band is a tight, well- oiled machine of talented players. On guitar, background vocals and keyboards, Ashe Blanchard and Ever Avil who switched instruments from song to song. The rhythm section keeps the beat alive with bassist Gwyn Osbourne and skin spanker Brandon Burkhalter behind the kit.

Performing two 45-minute sets, Little Queen delivered classic Heart numbers consisting of the usual familiar titles with a few surprises such as “Sing Child Sing,” “Little Queen” and deep cut “White Lightning & Wine,” a number no one expected. A highlight of their set occurred when Grace invited another DFW vocalist and a talented musician in her own right, Ms. Kristy Johnson for a duet rendition of “Never.”

A great point about Little Queen is not just their delivery of many of Heart’s timeless songs like “Magic Man,” “Crazy On You” and “Barracuda, they also expand their set with several rock classics, including Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog,”Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing, Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”and YES’s “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” sung by keyboardist Ashe Blanchard. Another crowd favorite and show stopper was Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” which made for a well -rounded set that kept the audience on their feet and guessing what’s next to come?

Well done, Little Queen, and well-deserved cheers for their performance by a very talented young rock band!


DESPERADO - Eagles Tribute

The night kicked into high gear when DFW favorites, Desperado, hitting the stage. When people talk about a talented group of musicians, these boys combined have decades of musicianship existing between them.

A six-piece unit that has been on the DFW music scene longer than some iconic rock bands, Desperado never disappoints. Metamorphosing from their original name, Into The West, the band today has found their footing - well placed and firmly on the ground.

The band consists of Donny Hart on lead guitar and vocals; James May also on lead guitar and vocals; Keith Goodman additionally on lead guitar, vocals, and voice box; Ty Weatherly on bass and vocals; Dave White playing keyboards and vocals; and last but never least, the man behind the kit, Mr. Mel Bittick, also adding back up vocals. True professionals and multi-talented, Desperado’s diverse musicianship brings out the essence of The Eagles music catalog. From their early works that put them on the map, to the iconic songs of timeless rock, the delivery is uncanny to the real deal. “Life In The Fast Lane,” “Take It Easy,” “Witchy Woman,” “Already Gone,” and The Eagles most renowned song “Hotel California”… the list is long and wide! As a nice touch, they even throw in “Seven Bridges Road” to showcase their harmony.

Their set consisted of a great mix of timeless Eagles numbers and also included several Joe Walsh solo classics, such as “Life’s Been Good” and “Rocky Mountain Way,” and also digging deep into the James Gang era with “Funk 49.” Desperado also included the Don Henley solo days as they performed “Dirty Laundry” and finished off with a surprise number - “When Will I Be Loved” by Linda Ronstadt.

It was truly a great performance by professionals. Whether it’s fresh faces like Little Queen or the established veterans in Desperado, DFW is very, VERY, fortunate to have not only these two acts, but a double fist full of great, talented bands who perform on any given night.

Big thanks and appreciation to Keith Kruze and The Revel Patio & Grill for providing an awesome stage and venue that highlights the great talent that DFW holds.

Triumph Celebrates Their 50-Year Career On Their Rock And Roll Machine Reloaded Tour

When you embark on your first tour in 38 years, it had better be a good show. When it’s a seminal classic rock and roll band, it had better be a great show. “Great show” was an understatement, though, as Triumph was the band on tour and “great” was replaced by amazing, tremendous and extraordinary. Or, as many in attendance will attest, the result of all these accolades combined.

The beautiful May evening induced a formidable walk-up crowd to purchase the few remaining seats so that the bands were playing to a near-full house of devoted fans who wanted to see them for probably the last time and many who would be seeing them for the first time. The diverse audience contained all ages, but they all had one thing in common - they were loyal to the bands, the music and what it stood for so many years ago.

The Canadian Double Header began as April Wine took the stage while the sun faded out on the full crowd in the outfield section, and immediately set the bar high with their anthem, “I Like To Rock.” The band’s 1979 signature song was a perfect first song and even though Marc Parent has a different voice from original singer, the late Myles Goodwyn, he was in fantastic voice and captured the fans from the beginning. The rock and roll continued with “Big City Girls,” “All Over Town” and “Say Hello,” as the tone and melody was outstanding.

Cameras came out for “Enough Is Enough” with its precise and easy-to-sing-along-to lyrics. The band formed in 1969 played two rougher-edge rock songs before the cameras came out again for the laid-back, yet still romantic ballad, “Just Between You And Me.” Couples danced in the aisles and fans moved and grooved. The big seller earned a huge round of applause that kept going for “Sign Of The Gypsy Queen.” It changed tempos, but geared up for the harder edge for the mid-song jam followed by the requisite drum solo as the penultimate song of the set. April Wine finished their much-too-short night with the high energy “Roller” and received a well-deserved hand from the fans.

A quick set change preceded a short video and then Triumph coming out to play “When The Lights Go Down,” which started their set of timeless rock and roll. They moved easily into “Somebody’s Out There,” with Rik Emmett showing his Canadian pride with a red shirt, red shoes and a red maple leaf on his guitar strap. Well-written lyrics and terrific music caused the videos to roll on “Hold On.” Phil X brought out so much energy, as was planned by the original three members joined by three “back ups” to give the crowd the same level of energy and power they performed with 50 years ago. Unfortunately, Mike Levine wasn’t able to make the show, but Todd Kerns filled in admirably all night.

Phil X sang lead on “Allied Forces” as both he and Emmett wailed their Flying V guitars and the dual riffs set off the song. “Blinding Light Show” saw Emmett bring out his double neck, 18-string guitar and play with his usual lightning fast fretting as Phil X soon joined him to provide extra energy.

The fans roared again at the first notes of “Rock And Roll Machine” as Emmett engaged the crowd and finished with a flamenco sound to add a different beat. Moore then fronted the stage and showed his showmanship as he led the singalong with the rock and roll heartbeat of “Rocky Mountain Way.” Video captured the rising level of enthusiasm as second drummer Brent Fitz raised the tempo and the classic song finished with a heightened crescendo.

Gil Moore then took a moment to note that original bass player Mike Levine wasn’t able to make this show, then introduced bassist Todd Kerns and the other two additions, who loved helping the originals bring the energy of the early 70s. This soon led into an thundering roar for “Lay It On The Line,” the seminal song that has been required playing on every classic rock station in the land. Singing in the crowd and hot guitar licks on stage made it an instant classic to everyone in the venue as they cheered relentlessly.

Phil X started another round of cheers when he began “Follow Your Heart” as the loyal fans lived and breathed with every note, word and movement. The heat continued as the Canadian Music Hall of Famers moved directly into “Magic Power” with its easily recognizable music. It was a great set-ending song as the crowd became one during the notable refrain of “I’m young, I’m wild and I’m free” that took every person in attendance back to being a teenager or young adult and the resulting emotions they felt at that age.

The fans cheered through the goodbyes and kept at it until Triumph returned to start the encore with “I Live For The Weekend” that kicked into high gear right away. Fans wanted more and more and got it with “Fight The Good Fight” that emphasized old-fashioned axe slinging and an old-fashioned light show to leave the crowd and the band happy.

It was a novel idea to add the three additional musicians in order for Triumph to provide the youthful vigor needed to recreate the same energy of the 70s. It worked perfectly as the musicians blended and meshed so much better than expected. It was a tremendous night of music for everyone and one that will not soon be forgotten.

Make it a point to see them on tour.
