Join us for a special evening celebrating a decade of Central Valley storytelling and the filmmakers who have helped make The Big Tell what it is today.

The Big Tell Showcase brings this year’s original short documentaries to the big screen, featuring stories from across Fresno, Merced, Madera, Mariposa, Kings, and Tulare counties. After months of researching, filming, and editing, this year’s filmmakers are ready to share their work and introduce audiences to the people, places, and experiences at the heart of their stories.

Come watch the films, meet the filmmakers, and celebrate this milestone with the community that has helped The Big Tell grow over the past 10 years.

This showcase is free and open to all. Let’s celebrate 10 years of The Big Tell, 10 years of local filmmakers, and 10 years of Central Valley stories.

Not In Our Town’s new film Minnesota Neighbors profiles the brave actions of Minnesota residents during ICE’s Operation Metro Surge this winter.

Millions of people watched the escalating level of racial profiling and violence in Minnesota this winter during ICE’s Operation Metro Surge. In the aftermath of two killings of U.S. citizens by federal agents, tens of thousands of Minnesotans used their voices, presence and know-how to stand in compassion with those who were harmed and affirm their commitment to democracy and the rule of law. Portraits in Minnesota Neighbors include immigrants bravely speaking up, clergy, journalists, teachers, local officials, doctors, restaurateurs, unions, business owners, and families who overcame their own fears to stand up for each other and for our freedoms as Americans. Their stories provide guidance, hope, and inspiration for communities everywhere.

Central Valley Neighbors: Spectrum of Solidarity

The film will be followed by a panel of local leaders who will speak to the spectrum of solidarity for Fresno (and Central Valley) Neighbors. Facilitated by Christine Barker-Dominguez of Fresno Immigrant and Refugee Ministries - FIRM, Jagmeet Singh from Jakara Movement, Nkauj Iab Yang from Cal Defense and Nora Zaragoza-Yañez from Faith in the Valley will share reflections on the film, the present realities in the Valley and opportunities for local action.

Proceeds from the film after costs will support travel funds for people being released from detention across our region.

This screening has been made possible by a partnership between Not In Our Town, Tower Theatre, FIRM (Fresno Immigrant and Refugee Ministries) and the Jakara Movement with the support of Sierra Health Foundation and Central Valley Community Foundation.

THE BUENA VISTA ORCHESTRA (sometimes referred to as The Buena Vista Social Orchestra, Orquesta Buena Vista, etc) is the world's foremost Cuban music repertory ensemble - featuring a lineup of musicians from groups like The Buena Vista Social Club, AfroCuban All Stars, the bands of Celia Cruz, Omara Portuondo, Chucho Valdés, Willie Colon & more!

Virtuoso Cuban violinist Rolando Morejón Reyes (who joined the 2024 tour across several dates) leads an exciting set of musicians pulled from the original Buena Vista Social Club performances, Celia Cruz, AfroCuban All Stars, and more. Ari Matti is an Estonian-born stand-up comedian known for his bold, high-energy style, sharp observational humor, and effortless charm on stage. Blending his Eastern European roots with global experiences, Ari has been entertaining audiences around the world for over 12 years with stories about growing up in Eastern Europe and his unique point of view on life.

He has performed across the United States, the UK, Europe, Canada, Asia, and Australia, including a successful year in Vancouver, Canada.

Back home in Estonia, Ari made comedy history with his 2021 tour, selling over 20,000 tickets. Following that Ari travelled to the United States to explore the opportunities in the American comedy scene.

At just 18, award-winning banjoist Ettore Buzzini is already a well-known name among bluegrass audiences on the East Coast. A dynamic hybrid banjoist, Ettore’s music is a captivating blend of traditional bluegrass, classical romance, and a modern string punch, bringing youthful energy and a fresh perspective to the genre. He has recorded with some of bluegrass’ most respected artists, including Danny Paisley, Mark Schatz, Michael Cleveland, and Chris McHenry. Now, by popular demand, Ettore makes his West Coast debut, bringing his acclaimed live show to California for the first time.

Faultliner’s mix of traditional ballads, bluegrass classics, and timeless originals has made them today’s most in-demand bluegrass band in Southern California. They draw inspiration from across the spectrum of bluegrass and old-time music, new and old.
