Waymo Expands
Waymo, the autonomous-vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, continues a rapid nationwide build-out of its driverless fleet. This month, the company announced fully autonomous operations, initially for employees in Miami, Orlando, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, with public launches expected in 2026. This expansion doubles the number of cities where Waymo vehicles drive without a human behind the wheel.
Below is a cheat sheet so you know where these vehicles are operating.
Where Waymo Already Operates Fully Autonomous Service:
• Phoenix, AZ – First full public deployment; 24/7 service.
• San Francisco Bay Area, CA – 24/7 service, expanded to more than 260 square miles.
• Los Angeles County, CA – 24/7 public rides across major LA neighborhoods.
• Austin, TX – Service available via the Uber app.
• Atlanta, GA – Operating via Uber across a 65-square-mile service area.
New 2025–2026 Rollouts:
• Miami, FL – Fully autonomous employee testing is underway; public access is expected in 2026.
• Orlando, FL – Employee-only rides now; public service 2026.
• Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, TX – Fully autonomous testing for employees begins now; public service expected in 2026.
Additional Announced Future Cities:
• Las Vegas, NV – Public launch is planned for summer 2026.
• San Diego, CA – Service planned for 2026.
• Detroit, MI – Autonomous operations targeted for winter 2026.
• Nashville, TN – Testing underway; public deployment expected in 2026.
• Denver, CO – Testing underway; public deployment expected in 2026.
• Seattle, WA – Testing underway; public deployment expected in 2026.
• Washington, DC – Testing now; public Waymo app rides 2026.
• London & Tokyo – International testing and phased deployment.
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation remains committed to ensuring autonomous fleets can reliably detect, recognize, and safely respond to motorcycles. Federal regulators have been largely absent as the private sector and state agencies have taken the lead. Nevertheless, the MRF will fight to protect your safety and right to the road. This has been and will remain a key part of our legislative agenda in 2026 and beyond.
