Cognitive dissonance is the psychological discomfort we experience when we hold two or more conflicting beliefs, attitudes, or values simultaneously. To resolve this tension, we often change, justify, or ignore the conflicting information.
✋🏾signs of cognitive dissonance:
1. Feeling uncomfortable or anxious when our actions conflict with our beliefs
2. Justifying or rationalizing behavior to alleviate the dissonance, we may find ourselves making excuses or justifying actions that contradict our beliefs
3. Avoiding new information or situations that challenge our current beliefs (this is called confirmation bias!)
4. Selective memory with a biased recall of information, where we remember details that support our beliefs more vividly than those that contradict them
5. Downplaying the importance of the conflict to convince ourselves that the inconsistency between our beliefs and actions isn’t a big deal
