1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée

1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée Est. in 2006, the Super 8 Cinema Soirée is an annual South Florida event celebrating super 8 film. Participants are not allowed to preview or edit their films.

Local filmmakers and artists gleefully take part in this annual event, loading their cameras with 3m20s of film, nervously creating their masterpieces. The Super 8 Cinema Soirée is distinct in that none of the films are viewed by the filmmakers before the screening. No matter what imperfections, happy accidents, or planned technical attributes occur. What’s shot in-camera is what’s shown. There is

no opportunity to make changes. Each participant gets one chance, one reel, and one take, premiering the films at a one-night collective screening. All sound is done separately, most often designed, edited, and mixed after filming. It’s played back live at the screening as a type of dual-sync-system. Other sound options for participants include projecting the film silent or adding live audio, which adds a performative element. Many of these characteristics lead to some exciting and refreshing films. It’s also a rare opportunity for public viewing and a chance to see super 8 projected in its original format. Future Events:

1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée

Information + History The 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée is a way to help create more independent films by a variety of artists while giving the local community an opportunity to view the films collectively in their intended and original form, through the gate of a super 8 projector, in a public exhibition space. It should be noted that using a super 8 camera is centered on the concept that this type of film, often discarded to antiquity in this digital age, is still an affordable film gauge for independent filmmakers. In recent years, more attention has been given to this film format, as it once sat on the edge of extinction.

This super 8 exhibition is distinct in that none of the films are viewed by the filmmakers before the screenings. Participants are not allowed to edit or preview their films. What’s filmed in-camera, is what’s shown. No physical cuts or splices are allowed, and there is no opportunity to make changes. Sound is prerecorded or performed live and synced during the projection of the films. This idea leads to exciting, refreshing films (or happy accidents), and a rare opportunity for a public viewing.

Each year the 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée, coordinated by filmmaker and FAU film Professor Shane Eason, has spawned a cache of great films, holds an impressive festive atmosphere, and continues to have a loyal, cult-like following. The popularity of this noncompetitive event has enabled its return most years with more filmmakers participating.

2019 will mark the 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée's 11th year in South Florida. It’s quite the milestone and a topic of discussion among those yearning the sight and smell of super 8 film, and the soothing sound of a super 8 projector.
