From Florida Theater On Stage: City Theatre successfully marks its 30th anniversary this month as a game-forging force in South Florida theater in challenging times. But this move is not remotely a finale for the persevering company continuing its various programs. Its champions are determinedly adapting to surmount and survive fiscal uncertainty.

And now Sunday's review at Florida Theater On Stage: Light Switch at Island City Stage is a classic romantic tale whose plot is so traditional that there is no surprise how this is going to evolve and turn out happily ever after for these gay protagonists. But playwright Dave Osmundsen creates a heroic Henry who is autistic, complicating every step on that familiar arc. He provides a deeply insightful depiction of the emotional and psychological challenges for Henry trying to find and maintain relationships. But the overall vision is applicable to any of us which is a multi-layered set of themes in itself about connecting to a world around us while maintaining – or being unable to do anything but maintain – our individuality. It also features a stunning central performance by Gage Callenius.

Friday's review from Florida Theater On Stage: Sometimes theater is just meant to entertain, to seduce, to lure. The world premiere of Vineland Place at Palm Beach Dramaworks has no profound message, but it offers an intriguing psychological thriller-mystery akin to Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. Two protagonist/antagonists circle each other lunging and parrying slicing away secret inside secret inside secret with the goal of confirming a truth about two alleged su***des that resulted in the transfer of great wealth.

From Florida Theater On Stage: In this banner years for South Florida theater, add another spot on the honor wall: Few if any productions have elicited as much laughter, rendered occasional pathos and drowned you in mind-spinning ideas as GableStage’s stunning Eureka Day by Jonathan Spector depicting of how difficult it might be to develop consensus among our deeply divided fragments of society, Directed by Stuart Meltzer, with Rita Cole, Mark H. Dold, Ryan Didato, Jordyn Moone and Jeni Hacker. And more reviews coming including Palm Beach Dramaworks' world premiere of Steven Dietz's Vineyard Place.

A whirlwind spring for South Florida theater as documented at Florida Theater On Stage: We have had at least one review or news item or feature story every other day since April 22. And we have assigned four reviews coming next week plus a news story plus…. (And we are working on other news stories later this month). A tip of the gratitude that to all our contributors.

Today’s review is Brandon Urrutia’s intriguing play, Kevin and the River Flan from Main Street Players. We’ve all been there: You swat or stomp on an insect and experience perhaps a pang of regret. But then there’s the title character. After he accidentally strikes and kills a butterfly with his car, he spirals into a state that makes him question his worth and whether to carry on. Thankfully, Kevin and the River Flan, while dark, isn’t a play that depresses us into despair. Rather, Urrutia’s piece uses hope and humor to engage with a subject many artists might avoid: su***de.
