On Wednesday, May 20th, cyclists around the world will gather for the 22nd Annual RIDE OF SILENCE - Des Moines.

We will meet at 6:30 PM at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. The ride begins at 7:00 PM and proceeds silently through the city to honor cyclists who have been injured or killed while riding on public roads.

As part of the ceremony, we read the names of Iowa cyclists who have lost their lives since last year’s Ride of Silence.

We want to make sure our list is as complete and accurate as possible.

Please review the current list here:

If you are aware of anyone who should be included, please email/dm us as soon as possible.

Thank you for helping us remember those we have lost and for supporting safer roads for all.

Paul Guignard
The Original Speed Freak…..

At the beginning of the 20th century, motor-paced racing was all the rage. Tucked close behind the big motors, the "stayer" riders -forks turned backward and gears impossibly high- absolutely flew. France's Paul Guignard was among the best. Placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the World Championships of 1913, 1905, and 1921, he was also the 4-time European Champion.

Once pneumatic tires became common, speed records shot up significantly. From 1895 to 1905, the maximum speed records rose from 46km to 89km per hour. Then Guignard put his stamp of authority on them. Imagine going that fast on the bike in the photo!

Sometimes advocacy looks like emails, meetings, and testimony.
Sometimes it looks like this. 👟🚴‍♀️
HSB 637: kicked to the curb. Nice work, cycling community.

We're celebrating HSB 637 being shelved, for now, but we know the work isn't over yet. We will be keeping a close eye on this and other legislation related to cycling, and will remain ready for action.

This bill was meant to regulate e-bikes.
What it actually does is regulate everyone who isn’t in a car.

HSB 637 was introduced on Jan 28th as a “safety” and “device regulation” bill. But the actual language goes way further - impacting bikes, strollers, wheelchairs, scooters, skateboards, delivery riders, commuters, gravel cyclists… and even events like RAGBRAI.

🚫 Roads over 25 mph? Off limits.
🚫 Class 3 e-bikes? Effectively banned.
🚫 Commuting on neighborhood collector streets? Illegal.
🚫 Scooters or mobility devices in small towns? Effectively Illegal.
🚫 Bike delivery? Illegal.
🚫 Bike races and large rides? Suddenly complicated - or worse.

This isn’t a bike bill.
It’s a sweeping rewrite of who is allowed to use Iowa’s roads and trails - and most people don’t realize it yet.

We dug into what the bill was meant to do vs. what it actually says

No action needed yet... the Iowa Bicycle Coalition has their pulse on this bill and will be watching it closely.

One of America’s most decorated track cyclists is facing the fight of her life. Four-time Olympic medalist and eight-time world champion Sarah Hammer-Kroening has undergone seven surgeries, suffered life-altering complications, and now requires ongoing respiratory support following a sudden vascular emergency.

As medical bills mount and more treatment looms, her close friend and former teammate Chloé Dygert has stepped in to rally support.
