Today is Armed Forces Day and Pentagon Force Protection Agency honors the dedicated individuals who currently serve in defense of our nation.

At PFPA our military service members play a vital role in our protection mission, serving in a variety of specialized positions across the agency. U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Ronald Clifton Bjorkland is the noncommissioned officer in charge of our CBRNE Screening Facility which processes and screens all parcels and packages mailed to the Pentagon facilities. Last year alone, our CBRNE Screening Facility screened more than 511,000 parcels for hazardous materials.

Clifton came to PFPA five months ago from the 10th Special Forces Group, 82nd Chemical Reconnaissance Detachment in Fort Carson, CO. When asked why he joined the military he shares, “My Grandfather, who is my namesake, stormed the beaches of Normandy in Word War II. I wanted to continue my family’s devotion to sacrifice, duty, and loyalty to country. In the face of challenges, the military and organizations like PFPA offer an extraordinary opportunity to discover the true raw extent of your capabilities.”

He advises the next generation to “seize every possible opportunity to shape your destiny and embark on a journey where courage and failure become your greatest allies. The path of perseverance awaits where once ordinary individuals become extraordinary heroes.”

He enjoys tinkering on his 1986 Ford Mustang with his son, Riley, in his spare time. As a father, soldier and PFPA leader, his devotion to family, duty and country proudly represents the very best that “Protects Those Who Protect Our Nation.”

Happy Halloween 2020 ⛓👻⛓

On this Halloween night, we remember the contributions of Mighty Girl witches of a different sort... "The N***s called them 'Night Witches' because the whooshing noise their plywood and canvas airplanes made reminded the Germans of the sound of a witch’s broomstick. The Russian women who piloted those planes, onetime crop dusters, took it as a compliment. In 30,000 missions over four years, they dumped 23,000 tons of bombs on the German invaders, ultimately helping to chase them back to Berlin. Any German pilot who downed a “witch” was awarded an Iron Cross.

These young heroines, all volunteers and most in their teens and early 20s, became legends of World War II but are now largely forgotten. Flying only in the dark, they had no parachutes, guns, radios or radar, only maps and compasses. If hit by tracer bullets, their planes would burn like sheets of paper."

So begins a NY Times tribute to one of the most famous "Night Witches," Nadezhda Popova, who flew 852 missions during the war, including 18 in a single night. She passed away in 2013 at the age of 91. To read about Popova's incredible life story and learn more about these largely forgotten heroines of WWII, visit http://nyti.ms/JbnOMC
