For the second year, the race will be part of the Mid-Atlantic Downriver Cup, which includes races on the Lehigh, Delaware River at the Lambertville Dam, and the Tohickon. This year, will be a bit different than past years as shuttle will not be provided, and there will be NO ONSITE REGISTRATION! There will also be a both a sprint and a classic race. Feel free to participate in either or both! The classic race will be from the Put-in to the Bloomington Bridge (24-28min)
The sprint race will be the 89 slalom course: from the dam (upstream from the regular put-in) to the 2nd Footbridge. Racers will be able to do two runs (only have to complete one), and the best time will be selected. In both the sprint and the classic, racers will start at one minute intervals. There will be classes for Wildwater boats, long boats and short boats. Schedule
Volunteers meeting: 9:30 am
Racers meeting: 10 AM. The sprint race will start at 11 AM
The classic race will start at 1 PM. The Savage River, is about 5 miles of non-stop, class III+ whitewater - It takes about 30 minutes to paddle from below the dam to the confluence of the Potomac with many turns and waves. A little bit of history:
In the Seventies and Eighties, downriver races were held on the Savage River every year, and sometimes twice a year. The Savage was a standard for Wildwater races. In 1989, both the Slalom and Downriver World Championships were held on the Savage River. For many years after that, there were no competitions held on the Savage, and only relatively recently has Garrett County College arranged releases during summer months to allow paddlers access to the river. We have been cooperating with them, in the past few years, to bring the Savage Race back.
