At just 8 years old, Garrett was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Two years later, he was diagnosed as a Brittle Type 1 Diabetic, meaning his blood sugar levels were extremely difficult to control despite constant monitoring, insulin injections, and around-the-clock care.
Over the years, the disease took a significant toll on his body. In February 2026, eighteen years after his initial diagnosis, Garrett received devastating news: he had developed End Stage Renal Disease and needed to begin dialysis immediately. Along with that diagnosis came the realization that he would need both a kidney and pancreas transplant to give him a chance at a healthier future.
Today, Garrett undergoes dialysis treatments four days a week while awaiting the hopeful news that he can be placed on the UNOS transplant list. This is the next critical step in his journey toward receiving the life-saving organs he desperately needs.
As you can imagine, this battle has been physically, emotionally, and financially overwhelming. In addition to dialysis, Garrett faces frequent appointments with specialists, including endocrinologists, nephrologists, cardiologists, and eye care professionals. He also travels for evaluations and testing with transplant-supporting hospitals such as Mayo Clinic, Banner Health, and St. Joseph's Hospital. Looking ahead, there will be extended stays away from home and many medical expenses that continue to grow.
To help navigate this challenging road, Garrett is currently living with his parents, who are providing the support and care he needs every day.
