What Mackenzie has learned this year
Wow! I can’t believe it is already the end of November. As I am writing this, I only have one month left as the reigning Miss Teen North Dakota International! I have had an amazing year of service and I have learned many valuable life lessons throughout this year. In this blog I will be sharing my top 5 lessons I have learned this year as Miss Teen North Dakota International 2021.
You always have a crown on, whether it is your real crown and sash, or your invisible crown.
I first realized that I always have a crown on when I was at my little brother’s football game. It was right after I was done with cheer practice, so I was wearing just normal clothes and had no makeup on, and a little girl looked at me with the biggest smile on her face and yelled, “The princess is here!” After she yelled, she came running up to me and gave me a huge hug. When making appearances, it is normal to be called a princess and have younger kids want to come and talk to you, but I was just wearing normal everyday clothes and had no makeup on that day. It was a pretty impactful moment for me, because I knew that I was someone that she was looking up to, and I was really making a difference in people’s lives. You always have a “crown” on your head, and you never know who you may be inspiring.
Always expect the unexpected.
A couple of days ago, I was doing a FaceBook Live at South Dakota’s capital grounds. There are always a lot of geese by Capital Lake and ever since I was little it has been my family's tradition to go and feed them bread or corn. I wanted to share that tradition over FaceBook live. It did NOT go as planned… I started out the live normally, introducing who I was, where I was, and what I was doing. I threw it a handful of corn to feed a goose and it waddled up to the corn and ate it. Then as I turned back to the camera, the goose came flying toward me! My mom and I screamed and then we couldn’t stop laughing! It was definitely one of my more interesting lives. You never know what is going to happen. Always expect the unexpected.
Always be ready to volunteer!
My platform is all about volunteerism. I love to volunteer any time I can, and have even volunteered at appearances that were originally going to be just for pictures! I was asked if I was able to help with a project while I was making the appearance, and of course, I said, “Yes! What can I do to help?” Always be ready to volunteer! That opportunity was so much fun, and one of my favorite appearances/volunteer opportunities from my year.
Life is short, DANCE!
Everywhere I go, I am always dancing. It may be silly, but it definitely brings a smile to my face and makes me happy. I love having mini dance parties whenever I am doing appearances. From dancing during the breaks with kids to the music on the radio at the pool, to spinning around in circles singing songs at my send off party for nationals, to emceeing at my local Ties and Tiaras dance, having a dance break is always the right answer!
Take in every moment!
This year went by fast. I have tried to embrace every moment. I only have 365 days as a titleholder, so I want to make every day count! One of my favorite quotes says, “Don’t count the days, make the days count.” The next titleholders will have an amazing year full of many opportunities. My advice to you: Always say yes to appearances! Share your platform with everyone you meet! Bring your crown and sash everywhere you go, you never know when an appearance opportunity will arise!
I feel so honored to have the opportunity to represent the state of North Dakota. I will forever be grateful for this amazing year of service.
