Classic at Mastick Update:
Runners, Parents, Coaches, and Spectators,

I want to start out that everyone made it off the race site safely albeit very wet. As the wind picked up to and weather hit, that was our one and only priority. I would like to also apologize for starting the 2 Mile race as I should have held everyone back. I do not take it lightly the severity of the situation. I am greatly sorry for putting the runners through that. I also want to thank so many of the coaches and parents who stepped in to get kids off the trail, back into busses, and wrangle in the items that were blowing across the field.

A silver lining of the evening is we will be able to fully fill all scholarships.

Moving forward, we want to make it up to the parents, teams, and kids who paid for a race and did not get one. I understand this may not be perfect for everyone but neither were massive trees and debris falling on the course.

Current Ideas for Mastick 2021:
- A 5k in November/December/January at South Mastick that will have a different course but still a 5k. Race will be free for all who signed up and open to the public. Due to the time of year, we will plan for hot chocolate and donuts at the finish line for everyone.
- Free entry (but no swag as they all keep their Mastick swag) into any Run The Land 5k over the next 6 months
- For farther away schools, please reach out to me if you have another idea. I do travel to put on events and we can get creative there.

Lastly, many are owed a shirt through our re-order. I am going to assume that no one received these shirts and so we will re-order for all these participants and have them for pick up at Second Sole- likely 2-3 weeks for this.

I appreciate all your understanding and feel free to reach out with questions. Here is to hoping 2022 won't have another act of nature impeding on some much needed racing,

Jay, Classic at Mastick Race Director

We want to take a moment to say thank you to a few of the many that make the Classic what it is today. This includes Cleveland West Road Runners for an army of volunteers AND funds that fill a few scholarships; Bill Dieter at 2nd Sole - Lakewood, OH for bringing so much passion to the race; Saucony who loves Bill as much as we do; Greg K who has devoted endless Wednesday evenings to this run as its fearless bike lead and all around work horse; and lastly John C Nakel who took over this race as RD years ago and grew it to the powerhouse it is today. John has since passed off the reigns for the past few years but continues to support scholarships and donate his time to help out.

2020 wasn't the usual Classic but we are gearing up to bring 700 runners back to South Mastick for the annual race. We will see you in August!

While our season didn't start off on the usual foot, plenty of legs were moving this morning for the first of many inter-team meets. North Olmsted's Boys and Girls team gave it their all and felt the familiar burn as you push yourself down the final stretch. We even had a guest showing of a former Classic race director, John Nakel!
There is something special to be said about their drive and dedication even when fall sports seasons weigh in the balance. We look forward to a few more of these on the horizon and wish these athletes all the best.
Don't forget- your sign up benefits senior runners {and we have some pretty cool swag to give you as well}.

Register online, by mail, or by phone and save the online processing fee. We are here to keep legs moving!

Update to 2020 Classic at Mastick
Keeping the tradition. Changing the format.
Fairview Park, Ohio — 28 years ago, the Classic at Mastick was founded to raise funds for high school athletes in the name of cross country and friendly competition. While we had hoped to toe the line with you once again, the health and safety of everyone participating in and supporting the event is our highest priority as well as the inability to obtain a permit. In response to the ongoing public health concerns brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, event organizers had decided to cancel the in-person event on August 12.
In light of this decision, registered runners for the 2020 event will have the option to receive a refund for their race entry, to defer their entry fee to next year’s Classic at Mastick, or be automatically rolled into our hybrid style event.
So how are we raising money and keeping cross country moving this year?
To keep the yearly tradition alive, continue to raise funds for high school seniors, and add a layer of competition, we will be hosting a hybrid event for 2020.
What this means:

1. The hybrid event will have a 19 day window to complete your race
2. Run the Cross Country-style 5k or 2 Mile as an Individual using Strava or another tracking app and submit your time.
3. Run as a Team. Coaches may submit all times as a spreadsheet.
4. We will bring the race to you. Contact Jay Toole at Runiversity and we will setup a timed race for your team at your home course.

On a personal note, I love seeing the wave of runners excitedly waiting for the air horn to go off. Cross Country season is my favorite season and I had hoped the Classic could have commenced as usual to bring the running community back together. With the move to our hybrid style event, I still hope to unite the running community and kick off the XC season with a run through the familiar trails of South Mastick or a XC course near you.

I appreciate all of you who have supported the event and hope to see you out on the course in the coming weeks. Regardless of what life throws at us, harness the running spirt and .
