Legacy Live: Women of Oklahoma Wednesday
Before there was Joan Jett, there was Wanda Jackson.
Wanda was born in Maud, Oklahoma, and went on to completely change the face of rock and roll! Wanda didn't just sing the music of the 1950s, she revolutionized it. Discovered while still in high school at Oklahoma City’s Capitol Hill High, she went on to tour with Elvis Presley, who personally convinced her to trade her traditional country style for the raw, high-energy growl of rockabilly. With her signature fringe dresses, fierce vocals, and iconic tracks like "Let's Have a Party," Wanda became America’s first female rock and roll star. She proved to the world that a woman could rock just as hard, loud, and wild as the guys!
Today, we honor this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Oklahoma Music Hall of Famer, and global music pioneer. Oklahoma music history lives loud because she paved the way! Show some love for the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson!!
