Blue Ridge Spring Dinger Baseball

Blue Ridge Spring Dinger Baseball Annual amateur men's baseball event held in April in Enka, NC for players aged 60 and over. Maybe even feel like a kid again when they drive one over the fence!

We created this event as an opportunity for older players (60+) to shake off the winter rust before starting their summer leagues and potentially re-visit the thrill of hitting home runs. The ballpark is by definition a youth-only facility, however we have been granted this unique opportunity by Bob Lewis Ball Park and some very good friends of "old guy baseball". The infields we use are set up fo

r adult play but the fences are closer which makes HRs a possibility. Teams that want to participate in this event should send us an email requesting an invitation, but be aware that we are limited to the number of teams we can accommodate in each division and receive more inquiries and requests than we can accept. Also, know that this is NOT a competition-driven event - it's a laid back mini-vacation for players and their significant others that includes time off the fields to enjoy the area, the camaraderie on the fields and have a great time playing the game they have loved since they were kids.

Thank you to all of the players who responded to our survey. Key takeaways were that the present scheduling of 5 games in three days received much more support than going to a 5-day event; driving to another field if we can find one close to the complex would not be a huge issue IF it means that more teams can attend; our umps do a good job overall; our welcome bag items seem to be a hit; and the present process of a lottery for teams seems to be the fairest way overall. All that being said, we will be sending out the team inquiry in a couple weeks, which will give us a good indication of how many teams/divisions we'll be dealing with so that we can set the dates. We have reached out to Enka High School to see if they would let us use their diamond, but have not heard back yet. Unless we can add that field we're stuck with 6 teams per division in 2027 and that would include the 70+ group - 8 teams and using the smaller field was not popular. Managers should watch for the email to indicate that they want to participate as it will determine who gets invitations.

There were a couple of suggestions that we will research: dry-fit, polyester tees instead of 50/50 blend; limiting the number of Elite players who also play on Open team rosters to three per open team; making all 60+ and the 65+ divisions 6-game playoff style instead of round robin.

Those who commented about concessions, field conditions, etc. - we do not control those issues. Please keep in mind that this facility is predominantly weekend-use, and heavily booked with tournaments from mid-March until the end of October and we're fortunate to have them allow us to use it on the weekdays. That leaves little time while we're there to do a lot of upkeep on the fields but Gary and his crew work very hard to maintain it. The concession stand is closed during the week and she has other responsibilities, so for her to staff it and get it open for us at all is a convenience for us that we're grateful for.

More information as we have it will be sent out at the earliest we can so that players/managers can plan for 2027. You can also keep an eye on our website for current news.

Again, we are extremely grateful to ALL of our players, managers and fans for your support of this event. We plan on doing whatever we can to make it better each year and get more teams involved. Thanks for your suggestions and thoughts - we take them to heart.

We are currently updating the website to wrap up the 2026 Spring Dinger with final results and adding a gallery of select photos for each division. There are also some blips about the 2027 event.
There will be a survey sent out within a week to all 2026 participants. If you have a moment to complete it we would greatly appreciate your time. We're anticipating the same time frame next year but we won't know exactly which divisions we will have or the exact dates until we know how many teams want to play in each division; and we expect to send out the team inquiries at the beginning of July to get that information. Managers should watch their emails for all of the communications with regard to the 2027 event.

What a great week, thanks to our 75+ players, fans and umps!

It is an absolutely gorgeous day here - perfect to wrap up the 75+ Sandlot play and the 2026 Blue Ridge Spring Dinger!

We cannot thank enough our players who travel to participate, our fans who support their teams, our class act umpires who professionally officiated, the concessionaires, the Bob Lewis Ballpark board who allow us to hold the Dinger here and Gary, Phil and Dave for keeping the facility in top-notch condition.
We have become successful and popular ONLY due to your support! Thank you so very much!

Our final game today will be the Wildcats vs the Buzzards and the Dodgers against the Moonshiners. As we do not hold this as a Championship event, all our players will receive a medal for being a part of this inaugural event! We'll draw from all the game home run hitters for the bat award after the games and take a group photo of all the players. This week was a lot of fun for us, and hopefully the players had a week worthy of repeating next year.
Safe travels to ALL! and see you next year.

Even with the rain that moved in during the night, the fields are a go and we're getting ready for the fourth 75+ Sandlot Division games. Hoping that the sun will show itself soon and make it a great day for baseball.

This morning the Moonshiners will take on the Wildcats in one rematch and the Buzzards will play the Dodgers. Incredibly, in only three games, the 75+ players have hit 19 home runs (so far), surpassing the total of home runs in ALL the other divisions this year! Wow! We have had so much fun watching the hits, double plays, pick-offs and other amazing plays turned by this age group. Such a joy to see how much they love this game and want to continue to suit up!

We can't thank the players, umpires, fans and custodians of Bob Lewis Ballpark enough for their support of our event!

Check back here shortly for results and photos of the games and see who emerges triumphant in the Home Run Derby later.

After a wet start and some squeegee and blower work, today's games got started at 1:15 and everyone was back in the baseball spirit!

Games ended with the scores:
Moonshiners 5 - Dodgers 4
Wildcats 17 - Buzzards 15

Fred Krause, Ray Huard, and John Jones (Grand slam!) with the Buzzards, Bill Smith (Dodgers), and Bob Bezzi (Wildcats) each had game home runs. Tomorrow we have re-matches between the Smoky Mountain Wildcats and the Moonshiners and the Dodgers and the Buzzards.

We'll also try to get in a Home Run Derby after games tomorrow.
