The Grand Encampment Opera House is a historical icon centered in Encampment, Wyoming. The building is available for a variety of events from weddings, funerals, parties dinners & performances. Complete with a prep kitchen and by-pass into the hall, complete with stage, makes every event easier. For intimate groups there is the Bell Tower Room available as well. The grand ole' gal was constructed
in 1902 with the stage added in 1903. In the first decade the building held dances, plays, social & family gatherings, and town offices. Back in 2008, Mayor Greg Salisbury appointed Councilwoman Mary Martin to head a renovation project when the council disagreed on the Grand Encampment Opera House’s future. The grand ole’ gal and Mary had been through many years with a variety of town events and melodrama plays and she couldn’t have her torn down. She orchestrated some town meetings and the consensus was to save as much as possible of the Opera House. She then asked several community members to join her on a committee to set the needs for the building and town. They were selected because they were volunteers in some of the organizations that used the building. It was a group effort of that ten member committee consisting of Mary, Rick Martin, Doreen Harvey, Susan Munson, Vicki Loftice, Becky Kreusel, Dick Ament, Lacy Hooker, Chelsie Knotwell & Karen Rauterkus. The Encampment Town Council then applied for a grant through the State Land & Investment Board and Wyoming Business Council to fund the renovation. That phase of the project would not have been possible without Doreen and her ability to put the committee's words into that grant and organize our need for this project. Then Doreen, Rick & Mary braved the Wyoming weather to attend grant meetings in Cheyenne and along with the support of Pat Robbins of the Wyoming Business Council and our Representative Jeb Stewart the Town of Encampment was funded. The months that followed proved to be a more of a rebuild that initially thought for the Grand Encampment Opera House because of what the demolishing phase revealed. There were some challenges during the process but proudly the Open House to give the Opera House back to the community took place in November of 2011.
