Back in 2019, I was still a relatively new transplant to Edmonds, and to WA state in general. I was without family, spouse/partner, or children, but wanted to find ways to build community and make this my home, nonetheless. Though working for a Seattle based organization, I was learning that so many women who are movers and shakers in the region lived here in Edmonds. I also learned that some of my neighbors and friends here didn’t know it either. I felt we should do something about that!
This is how Edmonds International Women’s Day (EIWD) was born. What I thought would be a small-ish, one-time lunch event has blossomed into an annual staple. Partnerships with local, women-owned and/or led businesses as well as regional companies and major sports teams played integral parts in EIWD’s growth. Selfishly, it helped me to get to know so many more people in our city, creating that sense of community and home that I had hoped for.
Though it is the Greek philosopher Heraclitus that is credited with the idea that the only constant in life is change, it is a quote from Mother Teresa that summarizes what’s coming next:
“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
While I hope the 6th Annual International Women’s Day held earlier this year won’t be the last, it will be the last one I spearhead. I’ve enjoyed the many friendships that were created, strengthened, and/or repaired for the hundreds of attendees that attended every year, it’s time for new leadership to take over.
Whether it’s someone that takes over directly from me (complete with my contacts, book of business, etc.), or starts their own from scratch (because you don’t need my permission!), I think it would be great to have someone take over who maybe is in the same place that I was back in 2019: new to the area, looking to create or strengthen community, and wants to find a fun way to serve. Either way, I hope the ripples that have been created can continue.
Thanks to everyone who has made the past six EIWD events memorable and accessible to any community member who wanted to attend. Individuals, small businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations alike. All have contributed to it’s growth and success, event during the pandemic!
It has been a labor of love as well as my personal investment (time, talent, treasure) every year. It does take a village to produce this event every year, even if not always with ease, and worth every minute.
