With Christmas upon us comes the hustle and bustle. Thought I would jump on for an update. Miss A is doing really well and looking forward to the holiday break. She continues to shine in her culinary class at school and brings home yummy treats that she has made with her classmates 3-4 days a week. Ashlynn has started a part time job sorting legos. These legos will be used in the sculptures that are made at the Mall of America. The sorting is done all by feel whether it be a 2-dot block or 6 dot blocks etc. She is enjoying it very much and hopes to increase her hours next year.
Ashlynn is really working hard at learning braille and has started reading small braille books. This is a pretty big deal for Ashlynn because for the longest time while she was sighted, she had zero interest in learning it and would fight us on it. Now that her vision has diminished to very little, she realizes the importance of it.
To piggyback on that last sentence, Ashlynn's vision remains very little. She no longer knows when we walk into a room and often if we are all in a room together and quiet, when someone talks, she startles. The plans have changed a bit as the realization that a cornea transplant is not possible at this point. If we would have started with this when Ashlynn was an infant, it would have been ok. However, we chose surgery after surgery which over the years has created so much scar tissue that it would be a very extensive surgery and we are not willing to put Ashlynn through that. Ashlynn is ok with this and continues to see out of a very small (think less than an 1/8th of an inch) window in her left eye. She still loves watching Jeff Dunham videos and Youtube.
We are tossing around a surgery to open up that small window a bit more in the left eye to try to give her more vision but that also comes with stuff. Always the STUFF! lol We are still trying to decide on this as a family and will make a decision likely in February as to what we will do if anything.

I hope this finds you and your family healthy and happy! Enjoy every moment know matter how big or small.
Merry Christmas to you and best wishes for a great 2023!
~Love, Sommer

From all of us, Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

Greetings Army!
We are approx. 3 months out from the benefit and a lot has been going on. I will take a few minutes to fill you all in. Ashlynn was able to purchase her Orcam MyEye and uses it daily in school for reading, etc. She was given a bear tag and after a 20-hour hunt, harvested a 250lb bear. With the help of some special people. amazing adaptive technology and a rip roarin .270 rifle in a lead sled she drilled it and dropped it. She is getting a rug made.
Ashlynn is venturing out of her shell a bit and doing some activities put on by CESA, the latest adventure was to a pumpkin patch in Bonduel. She met 2 other girls with visual impairments and became fast friends with them.
Now for an update on Ashlynn's eyes. She will be undergoing a surgery this Tuesday to revise a shunt in her right eye. 2 weeks ago on a Thursday night we were snuggled up and she informed me that she could no longer see out of her right eye (the good one). Upon palpating her eyes, I could feel that the eye was hard as a rock and had changed in shape. She was coming down with a cold so I wasn't sure what was going on. The next morning, I was on the phone with her eye doctor (while he was dropping his kids off at school, whoops) explaining things and he said, her glaucoma is out of control and the drops aren't doing the job. She needs a high dose oral medication and needs to be seen on Monday.
Well said cold was really COVID and we couldn't be seen until a week later. So long story short, her optic nerves are still looking ok which is a blessing, and the reason for the vision loss is a super-duper irritated cornea from the out-of-control pressures. In a perfect world she would get a cornea transplant, and vision would be restored. She has never been a candidate for this and still isn't until we get her pressures under control. The main shunt is 8 years old and the tissue around it frail, so we are talking about millimeters of space in her eye to try and finagle a new shunt in this already scarred eye.
So, if you get a chance Tuesday to send up a prayer to guide our Dr's hands in this delicate procedure, we would be grateful.
Yes, there is a chance that nothing can be done Tuesday. Then a "major" surgery would be planned and would involve putting a shunt somewhere in the back of the eye, but I am not going there yet cause its way too much to fathom.
Some may say why on earth do you keep putting her through all of this, just let her syndrome do its thing and let her go blind. The answer is simple, Ashlynn isn't ready yet and we will support her decisions until we have exhausted everything, or it becomes a risk to her health. I will update on Wednesday when we get back from MN. Until then...
If you've made it this far, thank you for spending your time with me. I hope you all are doing well and enjoying Fall.

With Love, Sommer

Today was a really emotional day for us all! As Jenna says in this video…we started this journey with a humble goal…maybe we can hit $20k and give Ashlynn something she needs.
I never get tired of seeing what “small towns” do to support each other!
$20K is emotional…$60K+ is incomprehensible!! Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for surpassing beyond what we could even imagine!!
Jenna Martin, you are a rock star! The mastermind…the heart and soul...you lead us though and kept us going! Thank you for all the hours and work you invested in this benefit…I’d say it paid s off in spades!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
