Trivia formerly played at the El Roco Analyzing questions from Saturday Night Trivia at the Roc Saturday Night Trivia

This will be my last posting on this page. The rudeness of seasoned players and the cheating from that same player has soured me to this trivia. I hope it continues to thrive, but not with me.

Pam, Dan and Bill hosted trivia Feb 18th. All did an excellent job. I do take exception with a question asked about the mascot for a WNBA team. We worked on the question and finally guessed the answer from the team's name. The host gave the answer as the Team's name and not the mascot, when questioned she said she would take any answer that was close. She had already corrected sheets? Did she go back and change any? Did she accept a wrong answer? Do hosts now accept any answer that is close? I can see the host asking questions out of her areas of expertise, but close doesn't cut it! In the past, when I hosted, I found it helpful to run questions by someone who did not come to trivia. It often gave me a point of view I did not see when I wrote the questions. Maybe that should have been done, in this case.

Trivia on Feb 11, 2022 was done by Bill for the first round, he had many questions on products, current events and pop culture. I never like TV questions from pay per view stations. His 2 free drink questions were good with an activity and a product. Dan did the music and used music from 1959-2019 but nothing older. his 2 free drinks were a product and a word. Pam did the specialty round with Soup as a category. You would expect her to do a better job and not have the category in many questions. This makes the category round not effective for giving teams any help with answers. One example was: Andy Warhol did soup can paintings, how many types were used. Not only does the category not help with the answer, but it is what is called a random number question, "I am thinking of a number, what is it?" More than half the questions had the soup reference in the question and not the answer. Her free drinks were a good Soupy Sales lead-in and a product.

Terry and Deb from the Master Debaters hosted. They always do a good job. Mike got 3 of Deb's Free Drinks. I always hate when one team wins all rounds, especially the host's team, which the Master Debaters did. I know you can't control that. Their team did have a large group on a cold night. It seems Gary has covid, we will see how trivia goes in the next few months.

Mike, Rachael (Read by her hubby), and Barry did trivia for the first of 2022. The Highlight of the night was Deb Moon getting the last free drink. She said it was the first time she ever won the quarters. She can never say that again! Master Debaters won 2 rounds.

Dec 31,2021 had trivia hosted by Nancy, Pam,and Jake. Nancy did the general round and questions sounded more like free drinks than general round trivia. The round was OK and she did introduce herself. Pam did the music round and all music was 1960's and forward. When trivia started, there was no 90's music and up, so 50's music and back was commonly included. It is a shame 50's and back, is no longer included. The last round of music was done by Jake. He also had No 1950's and back and only one from the 1960's. Jake did the lead-in free drink question asking for a company. When a team mate answered with REO, which is a car model and not the company: Oldsmobile, he accepted that answer. He then announced all the music specialty round would have a car connection. Many other hosts of music rounds include the year for each question, he did not announce years for each question. Maybe he did not want teams to know that there was not much older music. Pam had 2 excellent free drink questions, Nancy had 2 with one obscure food that many people had never heard of and a person question of a newer actress. Jake had the Oldsmobile/REO question and a final free drink of Tiger Woods that was Good. 3 new hosts next week.

Dec. 17 had 3 excellent rounds. No trivia Dec 24, Trivia on Dec 31 and Jan, 2022.

Trivia Dec. 10, 2021 had the same 3 hosts as Dec. 3rd. They did different rounds than they did the previous week. Round 1 was done by the person who did the specialty round. She had a variety of questions, but she was hard to understand, and some questions were too involved with information. They sounded more like free drink questions. Some questions had multiple answers that could work. She failed to introduce herself. Round 2 of music was done by the host from last week that did the general round. He also did not introduce himself. He failed to give years for each song. He did announce that one song was a cover, so when he played a song written and recorded by Buddy Holly, he failed to say it was a cover. We did not think it was Buddy, but since he did not say it was a cover, we were afraid not to think it was the original artist with a bad version. He did announce all songs came from You tube, which does not always use original versions. The final round was done by Pam who had 10 in each question or answer. It was a very good round, with the exception of 2 music questions. In the past we have tried to stay away from music questions in rounds 1 and 3 with one entire round of music questions. Free drink questions were also split up, the first round person had 2, a person in current events and a food that no one knew until she gave it away to a teammate with the first letter to the answer and what it rhymed with. The person who did the music round had 2 repeated free drink questions, Bob Ross and Wikipedia. The last 2 Free Drink questions were by Pam with the movie 10 leading into the last round and a final of Lady GaGa. Trivia was again held in the bar area with a party in the other space. Where we play next week was not announced.

Dec. 3, 2021 had 3 hosts from one team. A new concept being tried to help get different people hosting. A Good Idea. However, new hosts need to read some information previously posted on how to host. It is clear that playing is not a primer on hosting. The first host had some questions that were worded poorly. One such was asked what date was the single worst in terms of American deaths in battle. He wanted what battle, so when questioned he had to clarify he wanted the name of the battle, not the date. He also asked some TV questions that were on a pay per view station. Though I always thought that was not fair, younger players on my team liked them. I thought all 3 did a good job on free drink questions, with the exception of continually saying "This Person" instead of just saying he or she. The person who did the music has hosted many times, so she knew what she was doing, she usually has a good balance, but this night had very few from 1960's and older. The 3rd host had a lead-in free drink to her specialty round. A person from Broadway. Her final specialty round was not about Broadway, but what she called a jumping off from Broadway. So she started with a connection to Broadway and then went a completely different direction. The purpose of a specialty round is to aid players in getting answers, certainly NOT what was done here. Here are a few examples. 500 seats determine a Broadway venue, so how many points are awarded a winning trick in the card game 500? Or someone was married to someone else who was on Broadway, they share a name with what seaway? There was No way to predict where this person was going with any question. One question was confusing, she asked what song was number 1 in Billboard's Hot 100 on some date in 1958. In doing research, I found Billboard changed how they evaluated songs in 1958 to eliminate Jukebox plays, so the hot 100 was formed. For anyone to know music ranking on a certain date in 1958 is not a good or even a reasonable question. Each question was really just a general round question with no reason to include any Broadway connection. Certainly not a specialty round. Trivia was held in the bar area since the other venue was used for a Party. I did not think it would work, but though a little crowded, it was not too bad. The other bar patrons were courteous and a few of them, did play. Trivia will be in the bar area again next week. We will see how the 3 hosts from a team works. It will eliminate the requirements for each host to have to write so many questions. It would also help if we could find the primer that was written to help new hosts.

Nov. 26 was a double music. Music Questions seemed good, though I did not know many. One question from the first round was questionable. The Strongest muscle in the human body. A question asked in the past with the answer the tongue. The host's answer was the jaw muscle which I found to be one possible answer. However one site stated:
What is the strongest muscle in the human body?
Answer

There is no one answer for this question since there are different ways to measure strength. There is absolute strength (maximum force), dynamic strength (repeated motions), elastic strength (exert force quickly), and strength endurance (withstand fatigue).

The following are muscles that have been deemed the strongest based on various definitions of strength (listed in alphabetical order):

External Muscles of the Eye
The muscles of the eye are constantly moving to readjust the positions of the eye. When the head is in motion, the external muscles are constantly adjusting the position of the eye to maintain a steady fixation point. However, the external muscles of the eye are subject to fatigue. In an hour of reading a book the eyes make nearly 10,000 coordinated movements.

Gluteus Maximus
The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in the human body. It is large and powerful because it has the job of keeping the trunk of the body in an erect posture. It is the chief antigravity muscle that aids in walking up stairs.

Heart
The hardest working muscle is the heart. It pumps out 2 ounces (71 grams) of blood at every heartbeat. Daily the heart pumps at least 2,500 gallons (9,450 liters) of blood. The heart has the ability to beat over 3 billion times in a person’s life.

Masseter
The strongest muscle based on its weight is the masseter. With all muscles of the jaw working together it can close the teeth with a force as great as 55 pounds (25 kilograms) on the incisors or 200 pounds (90.7 kilograms) on the molars.

Muscles of the Uterus
The uterus sits in the lower pelvic region. Its muscles are deemed strong because they contract to push a baby through the birth canal. The pituitary gland secretes the hormone oxytocin, which stimulates the contractions.

Soleus
The muscle that can pull with the greatest force is the soleus. It is found below the gastrocnemius (calf muscle). The soleus is very important for walking, running, and dancing. It is considered a very powerful muscle along with calf muscles because it pulls against the force of gravity to keep the body upright.

Tongue
The tongue is a tough worker. It is made up of groups of muscles and like the heart it is always working. It helps in the mixing process of foods. It binds and contorts itself to form letters. The tongue contains linguinal tonsils that filter out germs. Even when a person sleeps, the tongue is constantly pushing saliva down the throat.

I guess the host did not find this information. It was also announced that trivia will change next week, with the main bar as the location. Now the trivia is held in a side convention area. The bar area has smaller tables and patrons who will likely not play, other than possibly disrupting play, we will see if they do or don't. It was also announced that trivia will change, but that was not explained. I guess they just want people to come out and find out.

Trivia Nov 12 was done by 2 hosts and all parts were well done. Something needs to be done to get New players.

11/08/2021

Trivia on Friday November 5th was good with good free drinks, the crowd was small with 4 teams. (Though one team had 15 players) We did not miss any questions in the last round, but the host called it a 4-way tie. Did all the teams have a perfect paper? Why did he do this? The team he plays with, when he does not host (15 player team) had previously won the first 2 rounds, They did not need to win all 3 rounds, shouldn't he have made it a least a 3-way tie? I always preferred 3 different teams winning each night.
