Hardscrabble Humper

Hardscrabble Humper The Hardscrabble Humper is a series of bicycle challenges starting and finishing in Eagle, CO.

The Hardscrabble Humper was founded and developed by former Eagle, CO resident Larry Grossman in 2005. The Hardscrabble Humper started as a gran fondo style self-navigated and self-supported backcountry mtb tour of Eagle’s expansive network of singletrack. This aspect of the Humper still takes place to this very day, in September or October. In recent years, Larry made the move to Denver to peruse

work and family. Along with this move came the inability to organize the Hardscrabble Humper. With Eagle’s loss of Larry came the gain of cyclist, racer, and bike industry veteran Jeff Kerkove. Larry passed on the duties of Hardscrabble Humper to Jeff and he has been organizing the Humper for the last 4 years. In 2018, with Larry’s permission, Jeff decided to expand the Hardscrabble Humper into 2 different events to showcase the cycling and adventure opportunities in and around Eagle, CO: the Hardscrabble Humper Mixed-Terrain and the Hardscrabble Humper MTB. The goals of the Humper events are to showcase Eagle’s cycling opportunities, give cyclists an unforgettable backcountry experience, as well as raise funds for area non-profits.

Tried out some potential "alternate" course options for the Humper Mixed-Terrain. We might add it in. We might not. Who knows. It’s fun when your legs are fresh, but they won’t be 😎😈

We are excited to announce that the Humper Bikepack route is open for the season! There are a few sections of snow, but they are very short and easy to walk through. With the lingering snow, this also allows you to go lighter on water...as you can filter from streams or boil snow.

Just a heads up, fire restrictions are ever changing, so know before you go! Also, be bear aware with food storage. There were bear tracks on the trail. It's June and they are hungry!

As featured on Bikepacking.com! NOTE: This ride does not have a group start. Please enjoy this adventure on your own time. Designed as a sub 24-hour bikepacking adventure, experienced bikepackers a…

We hope everyone is staying healthy, safe and practicing social distancing. Due to the current health situation gripping the world, the Humper Mixed-Terrain as an official event has been put on hold for 2020. Our friends at the US Forest Service are suspending permit issuing until the health crisis has flat lined. This is the right thing to do on their part. With that said, we are currently entertaining the idea of a Humper "lite" this Fall, which would be run in similar fashion to the Humper Mixed-Terrain the past 2 years. This will only happen if it is safe to do so. We'll keep everyone post. In the meantime, take care of yourself and those around you!
