Hearing it from a local business owner 💬 Just like Teddi said, downtown Fargo truly has it all—great hotels, unique shops, amazing restaurants, and unbeatable walkability. It’s exactly why a downtown convention center would thrive here, right in the center of everything. Visitors wouldn’t just attend an event—they’d experience the energy, charm, and local flavor that makes this community so special.

The location of Fargo was established with the construction of the first railroad bridge spanning the Red River in 1871-72. Since then, the railroad crossing has seen several iterations of bridge structures, changing with the needs of
a growing city.

The design of the Convention Center connects to the past by borrowing structural patterns and materiality from those early railroad bridges and the x-bracing structure within the existing Civic Center - using wood and steel to create a welcoming space for both guests and residents. The Convention Center will serve as the bridge between the urban environment of Downtown and the natural environments of the Red River - providing that link for all to enjoy
two of the most recognizable and defining areas of Fargo.

Within the downtown area, the proposed Convention Center will leverage the strong existing infrastructure, minimizing the need for new construction while ensuring convenient access for all visitors.
Did you know there are more than 2,041 parking spaces that exist within a 5-minute walk to the proposed convention center site and easy access to a warm and covered skyway so you don't have to walk in the elements?
The FargoDome has: 3,200 parking spaces (according to their website)
The Scheels Arena has up to 1,750 spots including the grave lot (according to a 2011 Forum article)
Between designated access, drop-off zones, and wayfinding, these connections ensure the convention center proposal not only anchors major events but also integrates seamlessly with the city's daily life and character.

A downtown Fargo convention center isn’t about turning downtown Fargo into a tourist destination for its own sake. Instead, an asset like this could strengthen the long-term social and economic health of the entire community. For downtown, a new convention center will be a strategic investment—one that delivers lasting value through job creation, expanded revenue within the metro’s economy, shared public spaces, and a stronger sense of civic pride.

Convention center users today—whether attending large-scale conferences, local events, or community gatherings—are no longer satisfied with functional spaces alone. They seek immersive, flexible, and inclusive environments that reflect the character of the destination and prioritize their personal comfort, wellness, and engagement. A convention center for Fargo is moving closer to reality—and the community now has a chance to weigh in.

In 2024, Fargo voters approved an additional 3% tax on hotel and motel stays to help fund construction of a convention center. Following that vote, the City of Fargo formed a Convention Center Committee to guide the site and developer selection process. Nine proposals were submitted in Phase 1, with four advancing to Phase 2.

One of those proposals—submitted by EAPC Architects Engineers—focuses on a downtown Fargo convention center that would utilize the existing Fargo Civic Center while enhancing and activating the surrounding area.

If you believe this is the best option, we invite you to share your comments at the link below The survey will remain open for public input until the end of today!

🍓🍉🍊With new businesses joining the neighborhood—like Tera, owner of FRESH—event attendees will always have walkable access to unique local shops.

Adding a convention center downtown would fuel even more momentum for small businesses, creating the buzz, energy, and confidence entrepreneurs need to open their doors and invest in the community.
