Apparently, our local sports reporter attended the end of the season Inline Hockey Tournament in Garden City this past weekend and submitted his report:
This past weekend was a bit of a struggle to get the End of the Season Inline Tournament in Garden City going. The forecasted weather did not cooperate with the forecast, and Shannon Dick, the tournament manager, was struggling Saturday despite the valiant effort by many, who attempted to dry the rink with shop vacs and towels. But all the work was in vain and the difficult decision to postpone the event was finally made.
I asked Shannon what he thought caused such discrepancy between the weather and the forecast? Shannon was simply beside himself. “They’re never wrong. Like…never! I just don’t understand it.” He tucked in his disheveled shirt, stood up straight, pulled out his phone, texted the weather people in Dodge his thoughts, which due to this being family content, I may not repeat them here.
Not to worry though, the tournament got underway Sunday afternoon, and there was no shortage of excitement. Goals were being scored by new and experienced players alike. Goalies were standing on their heads at times making ridiculous saves. One player was struck by the puck in the face. He simply picked up the pieces and went to the bench. Fortunately, his wife had a medical kit, sowed his face back on, and he was ready to go. He told me later, “It was a mere flesh wound. Nothing to worry about”, as he skated away from me looking like a jig saw puzzle put back together with tape.
In the end, as the movie Highlander would say, “There can be only one.” And George, Alex and Jenette took the trophy.
According to Jenette, this trophy means more than you can possibly understand. “Some think the Stanly Cup is the big One, but that simply isn’t true. To win this tournament in Garden City Kansas is completely unique. There is absolutely nothing like it. There are no words to describe it. We won the most important event in all of western Kansas!”, she said. And, well, who can argue with that?
And with that, most went to Old Chicago for dinner together and celebrated the season. Another great year of hockey is in the books. Even if it is inline, it’s still hockey.
