Our Story

Freep Film Festival is a documentary-focused event, with special attention paid to films connected Detroit and Michigan -- or with special resonance there. It believes great journalism and great documentary storytelling can inform, inspire and help push the region forward -- shining light on its challenges and celebrating its achievements. In addition to films, it also presents related panel discussions, parties, music events and more. Centered in the downtown Detroit core, the festival is produced by the Detroit Free Press and its business arm, Michigan.com. We went virtual for the initial element for our seventh annual event (April 22-26, 2020), and we are planning a physical element for the first week of December, 2020.
