Over the weekend, Film Blast executive produced a film based on the St Aubin Street Massacre. Co-Directed by Toni Cunningham and Kristine Patnugot, this film details the shocking murder of Benny Evangelist and his family in Detroit in 1929. Benny ran a cult and faith healing center out of his home, and one night… well, you’re going have to see the movie.

Orion: Story of the St Aubin Street Massacre plays exclusively at Film Blast Ghost Story on June 10th at the Players Club in Detroit. Tickets can be purchased through this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/film-blast-ghost-story-tickets-633782940837

We had so much fun at the first Film Blast! Big thanks to the film community for coming out on Friday, you guys were incredible. It was so amazing to chat with so many filmmakers and supporters. After hearing what some of you are working on, I’m excited to see what comes next!

This night wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Get Super Rad, The Planet Ant, Bamboo Detroit, MiFIA, Zack Jacobs, Amanda Lewan, Balkan House, the amazing Film Blast staff, Ben Corona, Toni Cunningham, Kennikki Jones-Jones, Rachel Sarasin, Kristine Patnugot, Joumana Kayrouz and YOU the Detroit Film Community.

This might be one of the best untold stories of the local music scene. So, what would say if I told you that during the 2000’s, the biggest venue for the hardcore scene was a skate rink in Westland? And then what if I told you that the guy who managed this venue was a 17 year old kid still in high school? Conrad Schmerheim’s up and down career in the music industry started when he had the idea of doing a battle of the bands at his family’s skating rink, and then somehow transformed it into one of the largest hardcore venues in the Midwest- with thousands of people turning out. It’s a really amazing and hilarious story and anyone who’s a fan of the hardcore scene should definitely check it out.

Skateland West plays as part of the Work in Progress screening at Film Blast Detroit on September 9th. Tickets can be purchased through our links.

"Local opportunities to make, screen, and watch movies can often feel inaccessible, cutting off filmmakers and audiences both from sources of engagement and support. But Film Blast, a Detroit-centered festival of local work opening this Friday at Hamtramck’s Ant Hall, is aiming to address those concerns. The event aims to bring audiences and creators together for a practically-minded panel on distributing work online, a block of short works, and a newly premiering pair of commissioned films with an afterparty to follow."
