Wayne State University invites you to Looking Back with Purpose: A Juneteenth Celebration on Monday, June 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at St. Andrew’s Hall. The evening will feature a keynote address by Dr. Lisa Bratton, historian and Assistant Professor of History at Tuskegee University, who will reflect on the enduring legacies of Black freedom movements. The program will also include the presentation of the 2025 Dr. Marquita Chamblee Community Impact Award honoring Dr. Erik Carter and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque recognizing the 1989 WSU Study-In, which led to the founding of the Department of African American Studies. This event is free and open to the public.

Wayne State University will host “Building Forward with Wisdom: A Juneteenth Genealogy Discovery Event” on Tuesday, June 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in the Undergraduate Library’s Computer Lab C. Led by Dr. Carolyn Haliburton Carter, a professional genealogist, this interactive program will introduce practical strategies for tracing family history and deepening connections to ancestry. Participants will explore archival sources, learn techniques for overcoming common research challenges, and gain tools to preserve their family stories for future generations. On what would have been his 100th birthday, Malcolm X’s legacy returns to the stage where he once stood. On Monday, May 19, Wayne State University will host a powerful Juneteenth event in the Malcolm X Auditorium, where he delivered a historic speech in 1963. Leading this centennial tribute are the youth of the Umoja Debate Team, Detroit’s next generation of changemakers, who will honor his legacy through powerful words, bold ideas, and purposeful action.
