🥃 What Does “Cask Strength” Bourbon Mean?

If you’ve ever seen “Cask Strength” or “Barrel Proof” on a bourbon label, here’s what it means 👇

Cask strength bourbon goes straight from the barrel to the bottle.

🔥 The result:
Higher proof (usually 110–130+)
Bigger, bolder flavor
A pure expression of what came out of the barrel

Many bourbon lovers enjoy it neat to experience the intensity, or with a few drops of water to open up new layers of flavor.

Look for 'Cask Strength' or 'Barrel Strength' when sampling at Detroit Bourbon Fest and taste the difference for yourself!

🥃 Whiskey 101: What’s the Difference?

Not all whiskeys are the same! The type you choose depends on where it’s made, how it’s aged, and what grains go into it. Here’s a quick breakdown:

🥃Scotch Whisky (Scotland)
Made mostly from malted barley and aged at least 3 years in oak barrels. Often smoky/peaty depending on the region.

🥃Irish Whiskey (Ireland)
Triple-distilled for smoothness, usually lighter and slightly sweet with hints of vanilla or fruit.

🥃Bourbon (USA)
Must be at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak barrels. Known for rich caramel, vanilla, and oak flavors.

🥃Rye Whiskey (USA/Canada)
At least 51% rye grain in the U.S. (often higher in Canada). Spicier, bolder, with pepper and cinnamon notes.

🥃Tennessee Whiskey (USA – Tennessee only)
A type of bourbon but filtered through charcoal before aging (the “Lincoln County Process”) for a smoother taste.

🥃Japanese Whisky (Japan)
Inspired by Scotch but often more delicate, refined, and balanced with floral or fruity notes.

✨ Fun fact: The spelling differs too—“whiskey” in the U.S. and Ireland, “whisky” in Scotland, Canada, and Japan.

🥃 Whiskey vs. Bourbon: What’s the Difference?

All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. Here’s why:

Whiskey
A broad category of distilled spirits made from fermented grains (barley, corn, rye, wheat).

Produced all over the world (Scotland, Ireland, U.S., Japan, Canada, etc.).

Flavors vary widely depending on grain mix, region, and aging process.

Bourbon
A type of American whiskey with specific rules:
✔️ Made in the U.S.
✔️ At least 51% corn in the grain mash
✔️ Aged in new, charred oak barrels
✔️ Distilled to no more than 160 proof, entered into the barrel at no more than 125 proof

Known for its rich, sweet flavors of vanilla, caramel, and oak.

✨ Think of it like this: Whiskey is the family name, and bourbon is one member of the family with its own set of rules.
