Car 303 the 1998 Subaru Impreza of Travis Mattonen and Anikka Nykanen launching into another stage at the 2026 Headwaters Rally on their way to 3rd in Regional O2WD.
There’s a special kind of optimism required to point a rally car at a gravel road, count down from five, and bury the throttle.
The clock starts. The dust flies. The forest closes in.
And for the next few miles, it’s just driver, co-driver, and the road ahead.

That’s rally. That’s Headwaters.

The Moobaru, seen from the front.
Car 625 — the 1996 Subaru Impreza of Aidan and John Hicks — charging through the Paul Bunyan State Forest on their way to the Regional NA4WD victory at Headwaters Rally.

Some rally cars are polished.
Some rally cars are famous.
And then there are the cars that become legends because they keep showing up, keep getting faster, and keep putting on a show.
The Moobaru belongs firmly in that last category.

Dust hanging in the air. Gravel under the tires. Forest roads stretching into the distance.
That’s Minnesota rally.

“Don’t spray the electronics!”
A perfectly reasonable instruction… delivered just moments before the champagne started flying.

The Hicks crew celebrating lakeside at Chase on the Lake after a successful run at the 2026 Headwaters Rally—and fortunately for everyone involved, the equipment survived the festivities.
This is rally at the finish:
Dusty cars, tired crews, great friends, and a little bit of chaos after a long day in the forest.
Exactly the kind of scene we hoped to see in Walker.

Enough black-and-white rally cars… Matt James showed up with the color palette turned all the way up.
Car 522 — the 2006 Subaru Impreza of Matt and Jacqueline James — absolutely ripping through the Paul Bunyan State Forest at Headwaters Rally, throwing dirt and color in every direction on their way to 3rd in Regional NA4WD.

This shot captures rally perfectly:
Motion. Noise. Gravel. Chaos.
And somewhere inside all that, a driver threading a car through the forest at speed with complete commitment.

Headwaters delivered some incredible roads—and the competitors delivered the show.

Flying the Crossroads Jump at Headwaters.
Car 701 — the 2004 Subaru WRX of Jason Cook and Maggie Tu — fully committed and fully airborne in the Paul Bunyan State Forest at the 2026 Headwaters Rally.

Moments like this happen fast:
A quick crest. Suspension unloaded. Gravel flying.
Then the car lands and disappears into the next section of forest road before the dust even settles.
This is why people stand in the woods all day waiting for rally cars.

Car 12 — the 1994 Subaru 3.0RS of Stephen and Katherine Gingras — staged and ready at Headwaters Rally before disappearing into the forests of northern Minnesota.
This moment lasts only seconds:
Final time check. Final notes. Engine idling. Eyes forward.
Then the countdown ends and everything changes.
From quiet concentration to full commitment down a gravel road lined with trees, dust, and possibility.
This is rally.

The Moobaru lives.

Car 625 — the battle-tested 1996 Subaru Impreza of Aidan Hicks and John Hicks — absolutely launching gravel across the Paul Bunyan State Forest on their way to the Regional NA4WD win at Headwaters Rally.

This car is everything grassroots rally is about:
Built, driven, repaired, improved… and driven flat-out again.
Minnesota rally at its finest.

Full attack at Headwaters.
Car 717 — the 2002 Subaru Impreza of Peter Farrow and Jackson Sedivy — throwing gravel deep into the woods on their way to 2nd in Regional L4WD at the 2026 Headwaters Rally.

This is the kind of road that rewards commitment:
Loose surface. Tight exits. No room for hesitation.
The Paul Bunyan State Forest delivered exactly what rally drivers want—and exactly what spectators came to see.

Minnesota gravel. Spring sunlight. Flat-out through the trees.
That’s rally.

Into the woods at Headwaters.
Car 897 The 2015 Subaru WRX of James Randall and Andrew Rausch charged through the Paul Bunyan State Forest on their way to the Regional L4WD win at the 2026 Headwaters Rally.

This is what Headwaters is all about:
Fast gravel roads. Spring light through the trees. Cars dancing on the edge of grip.
One moment you’re flat-out through the forest… the next you’re setting up for the next corner with nothing but dust in the mirror.

Thank you to the competitors, volunteers, officials, landowners, sponsors, and fans who helped bring rally back to Walker in such a big way.
Minnesota rally is building momentum again.
