Our Story

Happy Hollowdays was formed in 2016 by local DSM artists and makers, Katherine Hutchinson and Nicole Rutherford. The pair both had small businesses selling their handmade goods, Katherine under KatMeow Embroidery and Nicole under Nicole + Dime Jewelry. After busting their budgets filling out vendor applications for much larger events over the years, they both agreed that it could be beneficial to host an event that focused on the specific needs of a small creative business owner. Booth fees can be notoriously high for craft shows, and at times can be a struggle to even make that investment back. The goal with Happy Hollowdays is to use the combined resources of the other creatives in Des Moines to design an event that not only serves the public, but also it’s artists’ as well! Along came Reed’s Hollow Restaurant as the event location, already a popular local restaurant in the heart of Beaverdale. Owner and Chef Zachary Gutweiler agreed that by joining forces with other local small businesses, we could host an event that would bring in the masses and make an event that drove traffic to the restaurant as well as introducing local creative businesses to the people of Beaverdale and Des Moines.

Fast foward to 2019, and sadly our host venue, Reed’s Hollow has closed it’s doors indefinitely. Luckily, we have friends and colleagues with open hearts and open doors, and Andrea and Shyla at Art Terrarium came to the rescue and offered to host the 2019 Happy Hollowdays. Art Terrarium gives us a bigger and brighter creative space to work with, in a centrally located downtown DSM address. Not to mention, we will be surrounded by the most lush and gorgeous succulents and house plants...the 2019 Happy Hollowdays will be a lively and fresh space that can house up to 20 vendors, and we are so excited to branch out and continue our little show.

Happy Hollowdays is a curated event, and features the best of each creative business owners in the City with no duplicates of any type of goods or medium. It’s goal is to host a festive and relaxed last minute shopping event, while featuring a handful of the cities most talented creators. Stop by and check us out for yourself!
