Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining three fellow artists for a panel at Kirkwood Community College, talking with students about The Business of Making Art.

These students were curious, thoughtful, and full of great questions. I’m pretty sure I left with more energy than I gave.

Afterward, they hosted a reception for our exhibit in the Kirkwood Gallery, and it was a joy to see the work in such a great space, surrounded by people who cared about it.

Some people go to the lake to relax. I go to the lake to shop for free materials. Spent Sunday at Saylorville picking out driftwood. Freshly cleaned and dried driftwood that is headed to the studio.
They will be used in pieces headed to the Invitational Art Fair at the Val Air Ballroom, November 6 & 7. The lake did the hard part of shaping them. I’ll take it from here.

Windbent, Waterworn is open.
This show is my love letter to nature: to the prairie grass that bows and springs back, to the driftwood the lake hands over smooth, to the milkweed pods that split open and let go.
Clay vessels meet copper wire, jute, stone, and driftwood. Some of them lean. Some are mended. All of them are shaped by something bigger than they are.

Mugshot Monday: Jade 🌊
Some glazes start in the studio. This one started at the shoreline.
Jade is my nod to lake water: that green-blue you get when the sun hits the shallows and the sand shows through. I wanted a mug that feels like standing at the edge of the water with your coffee, no rush.
Handbuilt with a full-grip handle and shore inspired texture.

Some stones you pick up. Some you build a whole vessel around.
A little peek at new work heading to my upcoming shows: the Cairn Vessels. Handbuilt clay, a found stone set at the neck, a rim touched with copper, and a flash of blue inside.
There’s more where this came from. Dates soon. For now, consider this the first stone on the pile.

Mugshot Monday ☕🌻
One handbuilt mug, one very good backdrop.
Every glaze I mix starts outside. This Mustard Yellow is pulled straight from the sunflowers behind it, the fall fields, the soft golds of ripening crops, the dusty greens, the earthy browns of turned soil. Iowa does the color work. I just fire it.

Handbuilt, full-grip handle, made for holding on to a good morning.
