HUNTING FOR HISTORY: DERBY PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENTS THE TERCENTENARY TIME CAPSULE

Last year the City of Derby unearthed the Tercentenary Time Capsule. For Derby's 300th Anniversary, residents put mementos in the capsule for us to open and recover. Though water got into the time capsule Derby Public Library and our history team led by Christine Boulay salvaged what they could. The items that survived are now archived at Derby Public Library!

Derby Public Library is thrilled to announce our City of Derby Time Capsule Display in honor of the 350th anniversary this year, showcasing items and artifacts Derby residents donated in 1975 to be dug up 50 years later. The display will be up from May to June and features class rings, coins, plates, toys, and other Derby spirit paraphernalia. Stop by and see this bit of local history with your own eyes!

The 20th anniversary class for the Derby Hall of Fame chosen by the Hall of Fame Committee brings the number of Hall members to 72. The official announcement was made on May 10, 2026 - as Derby's 350th birthday year comes to an end. Each of the members is memorialized with a brick on the plaza at the entrance to the Derby Greenway.
The three members of the Class of 2026 includes business and medical leaders in Derby. One operated a circulating library in his business before public libraries existed in Derby. Another was a true pioneer and inventor in the automobile industry and the third was a senior surgeon at Griffin Hospital, had his own private hospital and even was Chairman for Derby’s Tercentenary Committee!

It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of Michele Linane of Derby. Michele was a lifelong Derby resident and a vital member of the Derby 350th Anniversary Celebration Committee. She was also the daughter of retired Derby Finance Office Assistant Barbara Linane.

Michele’s generous spirit was unmatched. She was the backbone of the 350th anniversary events, bringing outstanding organization, a sharp eye for detail, and true professionalism. Those events would not have been the same without her, and we owe her our heartfelt gratitude.

Michele spent her career working with young children, and it was more than a job—it was her calling. She had a special gift for helping children feel seen and valued, and for bringing out the best in each of them. Watching her with her “kids” was truly inspiring.

She was generous with her time and talents, and a deeply loyal friend. Anyone who knows the “Chic’s of 86” knows how close they have been since their school days, and Michele embodied that spirit of loyalty and sisterhood. Her friends stood by her through her illness with unwavering love and strength.

In her daily life—serving her family, church, work, friends, and the causes she cared about—Michele was known for her thoughtfulness and attention to detail. She noticed what others needed and had a quiet way of making people feel special and cared for.

She lovingly cared for her mother, her aunt, and so many others.

Michele will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched. May we honor her memory by carrying her generosity forward. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Please join Mayor Joseph DiMartino and the City of Derby in extending our deepest sympathies to the Linane family during this difficult time.
