It's Saturday, so that means it's time for our first ; first up is the incomparable Claudio Monteverdi. If you’ve ever wondered how music evolved from the ethereal, layered choral textures of the Renaissance to the dramatic, theatrical works of the Baroque, he, more than anyone else, was the culprit.

Monteverdi was the ultimate bridge between two musical worlds. Championing the "seconda prattica" ("second practice") during his famous war of words with Giovanni Artusi, Monteverdi ushered in a revolutionary approach to composition in which poetry and emotional expression took precedence over traditional harmonic rules. While this philosophy birthed the very first operatic masterpieces, it was perfected in his groundbreaking books of madrigals.

Through these secular vocal works, Monteverdi transformed the madrigal from a polite courtly pastime into a vehicle for raw human passion, using daring harmonies and vivid text-painting to bring the poetry to life. We are excited to showcase a couple of these brilliant, emotionally charged pieces at The Five Cities Baroque Festival: Young Artists in Recital, Friday night, June 19 at St. John's Episcopal Church - Decatur, IL. Mark your calendar - you won't want to miss this!
