Just 31 days until Bright Leaf Brew Fest on November 14, and you know one reason this event even exits is because of something signed into law 48 years ago today.

On this day in 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed into law HR 1337, allowing adults to brew up to 100 gallons of b**r per person or 200 gallons per household annually without paying federal excise tax. The law then took effect on February 1, 1979.

So why is this important to craft b**r? Because many craft breweries were later started up by people who started brewing at home and honed their recipes and decided to open a brewery. Cheers to that!

I hope everyone is looking forward to the Bright Leaf Brew Fest on November 14. And one thing we need to make this event successful is VOLUNTEERS!

As this is an all volunteer event (even the folks behind the scenes working on this during the year) we can’t do it with out you. We have multiple shifts you could help work in such areas as Registration, Cleanup/tear down, ID checker, volunteer check in, ice runner, and b**r server.

And for volunteering for at least one shift you’ll receive a BLBF t-shirt and sample glass and admission to event to your alternating shift.

🍻 OPENING DAY IS ALMOST HERE! 🍻

The taps are loaded, the glasses are ready, and the wait is almost over!

For opening day, we’ve got a little bit of everything — some old favorites, some brand-new brews, and even a few b**rs sporting new names.

From the smooth and malty Radiator Red to Man Goes to Bar, Hazed and Confused, Magruder’s Stout, Triple Stacks, and everything in between… there’s plenty to explore. 🍺

Some b**rs you’ll recognize.
Some you won’t.
And a few might make you wonder where the hell we came up with the name. 😂

And to add a fun fact (maybe not for some back in 1916) about Virginia and Prohibition. Most of us know Prohibition took affect across the US in 1920, but did you know it started early in Virginia. On this day in 1914, Virginia voters voted almost 2 to 1 to go dry, over 3 years earlier than the federal law went into effect. The law, which then went into effect on November 1, 1916 made it illegal to produce or sell alcohol, but not consume it. So neighboring places in DC and Maryland took advantage and started placing ads telling people where to buy alcohol out of state. This was a long 17 year period until it was repealed in 1933. Cheers to the repeal!
