It is with both sadness and joy that we announce the ending of the Texas Queerlesque Festival. We are sad, of course, because we love TXQF and our festival family so very much, and will miss it terribly. It has been a place of the deepest connection, the brightest sparkle, and the most fantastic showcases of the immense and diverse talent our q***rlesque family boasts. We are also joyful, not only because of the incredible experiences we have had at each festival, but because we know that this community is brimming with talent, ambition, motivation, and creativity. We are so proud of the other shows and festivals that happen in Texas, and you can rest assured you will see all of the TXQF staff front and center supporting other fabulous events.
There are many, many reasons we’ve made this decision, and it was a very long conversation (a full year) and required a lot of deep reflection. As producers, we have always tried to strike a balance between creating space for others as well as nurturing our own creativity and inspiration. We are stepping boldly into this bittersweet decision, and taking big steps in terms of our own creative pursuits, refocusing and streamlining our efforts. Do not worry – we (as always) have other projects, passions, and plans that we will be working on in the coming years. Sometimes it is necessary to let go of something you love in order to make room for something new, and that is what we are doing.
We cannot wait to see what this community comes up with. We are already seeing so many wonderful stages being curated across the state, and we adore the network of shows we have that allow us to bring in traveling performers and tour them around Texas. We hope to see more QTPoC leaders, producers, headliners, and event planners. We hope to see innovative approaches to showcases and festivals. We hope to see more emphasis on shared knowledge, elevation of the craft, and providing education and support to folks who have not had access to formal arts training. We hope to see a continued outpouring of support from our friends and allies, and we hope to see ongoing efforts to highlight and challenge the injustices that serve to oppress and erase our community.
Please do not stop making art, do not stop shining, do not be silent. The qu**rs at night will always be big and bright – deep in the heart of Texas.
With love and sparkles,
Lillith and Milo
