🕰️ Throwback Thursday: The Story Behind Native American Day

As we approach Native American Day, let’s take a look back at an important chapter in South Dakota history. 🌄

In 1989, under Governor George S. Mickelson, the South Dakota Legislature unanimously passed legislation proclaiming 1990 the “Year of Reconciliation” between Native Americans and whites and changing Columbus Day to Native American Day.

On October 8, 1990, people gathered at Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Memorial for the very first celebration. Since then, South Dakota has observed Native American Day each year on the second Monday of October.

Governor Mickelson reminded us:
“We can reason together, we can negotiate, we can dig deep into our hearts for compassion.”

South Dakota’s lead has since inspired many other states and communities to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

💬 This Native American Day, let’s continue to learn, listen, and celebrate the cultures, traditions, and contributions of Native Americans—past, present, and future.

There are 4 ways for businesses to participate and earn points throughout Homecoming Week:

🎬 1. DRESS-UP DAYS — 10 POINTS
Show off your Hollywood spirit!
